Concerns received may be very clinical, procedural and/or technical in nature, and situations may contain significant ethical dimensions.

The incumbent must possess the ability to act within this context, which includes comprehensive clinical knowledge and knowledge of region-wide patient care and service delivery.

This also includes the ability to understand and protect patient's interests, while simultaneously minimizing risk for Covenant Health. The Consultant will also assist in identifying concern trends and opportunities for quality improvement within Covenant Health. The Patient Relations Consultant must possess considerable skill to balance diverse and conflicting interests, and expectations. The Patient Relations Consultant coordinates the interaction and corresponding communication between patients, families, visitors, physicians and Covenant Health staff. Patient Relations Consultant facilitates a means through which patients, residents and families can seek solutions to concerns and inquiries. This leadership role requires the individual to be able to work effectively in unpredictable and volatile situations.

The role also requires an individual who can incorporate the mission, values and ethical principles of Covenant Health in the concerns resolution process, objectively.

The Patient Relations Consultant manages all concerns and commendations in accordance with applicable statutes and regulations.

Of particular relevance are the Patient Concerns Resolution Process Regulation, Covenant Health Cooperation and Service agreement with Alberta Health Services with regards to the Patient Concerns Resolution Process, Health Information Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Mental Health Act and the Protection of Persons in Care Act.
