Summary of Duties:
Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Communications Advisor is responsible for providing advice and communications counsel to the Mayor.
Work Performed:
- Liaise with government offices, community groups, media partners and constituents to develop and sustain working relationships between City representatives and the Mayor's office.
- Develop communication and public engagement strategies pertaining to the Mayor's office.
- Develop and produce engaging and compelling content utilizing video, photos, and audio pertaining to the Mayor's public engagements.
- Lead communications on behalf of the mayor during crisis resolution and emergency management situations.
- Collaboratively work with City administrators including corporate communications to aid in the development of various strategies, event organization and special projects related to communications.
- Maintain a working knowledge of all City of London business, Council directions, standing committees and policies.
- Identify emerging trends and potential issues through ongoing scans of media environment and develop issues management plans.
- Craft correspondence on behalf of the Mayor for the purpose of intergovernmental communication at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels.
- Conduct historical and demographic analyses of specific regions in the municipality to provide guidance on opportunities for resident engagement by council and Mayor's Office.
- Develop clear, effective, and timely communication tools and templates such as presentations, speaking notes, news releases, backgrounders and media question and answers.
- Prepare the Mayor for media interviews and act as a spokesperson in the media when required.
- Act as a point person for all community groups to consult on status of communication initiatives.
- Undertake various special projects that support the Strategic Plan at the request of the Mayor.
- Demonstrate commitment to antiracism, antioppression, and human rights through practices and interactions with community partners, employees and individuals and support programs and initiatives that reflect this commitment.
- Demonstrate commitment and adherence to Health and Safety legislation and programs; actively promote a culture of safety.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Undergraduate Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Public Administration, or other related discipline which involves research and writing.
- Five years of related senior municipal office administration experience with sound knowledge of government or corporate communications preferably with a focus on media relations and speech writing.
- Project Management Certificate is an asset.
- Adhere to the City of London policies and procedures to include the Employee Code of Conduct.
- Valid Class G Driver's License.
Skills and abilities in the following areas are necessary:
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in communications, issues management, media relations with an understanding of the Mayor's office.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal and customer services skills, including conflict resolution and problem solving.
- Demonstrated ability to shoot and quickly edit video to produce engaging content across multiple social media platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to be an effective team member and contribute to programs and services provided by the team.
- Highly effective verbal and written communication skills, with emphasis on preparing content that resonates on various social media and digital platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with diverse populations within the community; experience working collaboratively with organizations, clients, and other members of the public.
- Ability to provide a high level of attention to detail, make sense of data and solve problems.
- Ability to understand the importance of service delivery; contribute to the implementation of initiatives that support citizens in a timely and effective way.
- Strong organizational skills including but not limited to planning, prioritizing, time management and the ability to multitask.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated customer service focus and ability to prioritize and perform duties with tact, diplomacy, political acuity, and confidentiality.
Compensation and Other Information:
$75,380
This position will require work on evenings and weekends.
This is a contract position within the Mayor's Office at City Hall. This position is being filled on a temporary basis up to November 30, 2026.
