DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES AND ASSOCIATE DEAN, FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES


The Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences serves as the overall academic leader of the School, and works closely with the Chairs and Directors of the School's constituent units to advance the education and research missions of the School.

The Director is also an Associate Dean, representing the School and leading on the biomedical sciences portfolio more generally within the leadership team of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The Director/Associate Dean is a member of the Faculty Deanery Executive and reports to the VP/Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The Chairs and Institute Directors within the School report to the Associate Dean, who serves as a delegate of the VP/Dean for this purpose.

The Director/Associate Dean has a responsibility for the School's budget, space, management of core facilities and platforms, and faculty recruitment.


General responsibilities of the Director, SBMS and Associate Dean, FMHS
In collaboration with department chairs and institute directors, and in alignment with Faculty and University strategic plans, set the strategic goals of the School of Biomedical Sciences and assure their effective implementation;
Promote an inclusive and collaborative culture to take full advantage of the interdisciplinary strengths and opportunities within the School of Biomedical Sciences;
Build collaborative links across the FMHS and the University, and with McGill-affiliated hospital-based research institutes;
Advocate for the School of Biomedical Sciences and its component units within the FMHS;
Work with the Faculty's leadership to optimally allocate space, administrative support, and other resources within the School of Biomedical Sciences;
Assure a collegial internal governance structure is in place to meet the School's goals;
Oversee the administration of campus-based research facilities and platforms, in conjunction with the Associate Dean, Research;
In collaboration with department chairs and institute directors, establish priorities for new faculty recruitment and oversee equity-compliant search and selection processes, in conjunction with the Vice Dean, Academic Affairs;
Support department chairs and institute directors in assuring the career development and mentorship of faculty members across all career stages and profiles;

Department of Biomedical of Engineering;
Department of Human Genetics;
Department of Microbiology and Immunology;
Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics;
Department of Physiology;
Dahdaleh Institute of Genomic Medicine; Goodman Cancer Institute.


Educational Responsibilities
Position the School as a magnet for top students from Quebec, the rest of Canada, and internationally;
In collaboration with department chairs, promote excellence and innovation in the School's educational programs at all levels, in alignment with the Faculty's Education Strategic Plan and in the spirit of continuous quality improvement;
Work closely with the Associate Dean, Biomedical BSc, Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs to ensure that graduate training programs meet Faculty and University standards;
Work closely with and oversee the Assistant Dean, Biomedical Sciences Education to promote excellence in biomedical science undergraduate programs within the School and across the FMHS;

Seek opportunities to streamline undergraduate and graduate curricula to teach cross-cutting competencies and enhance interdisciplinarity across programs in the School.


Research Responsibilities
Promote activities that ensure and augment the School's excellence and reputation for nationally-and-internationally-leading research;
Ensure that the research programs within the School are aligned with the FMHS' Strategic Research Plan;
Represent or delegate a representative of the School on the Faculty's Standing Committee on Research (SCoR) and other committees at the University, as appropriate;
Work closely with the Scientific Directors of the hospital-based research institutes and leadership of the School of Medicine and the School of Population and Global Health to promote translational research and collaboration;
Facilitate the development of large-scale interdisciplinary grant proposals; Promote commercialization and innovation.
