    This position is responsible to manage or maintain the FNUniv relationships with Elders. Under the direction of the Director of Student Success Services, the Elders Helper assists in coordinating Elders involvement with FNUniv activities. This includes participation with Cultural Committees. The Elders Helper must have extensive knowledge of the ceremonies, protocols, and customs associated with traditional spiritual practices of First Nations.

    With approximately 2,000 students and over 143 full-time faculty and staff at three campuses, First Nations University provides an opportunity for students of all nations to learn in an environment of First Nations cultures and values. With a 38 year history, the University continues to uphold its mission of enhancing the quality of life, and to preserve, protect and interpret the history, language, culture and artistic heritage of First Nations people.     Duties and Qualifications:

    Duties and responsibilities include: Coordinate and manage the activities and participation of the Elders who are asked to participate in various FNUniv projects and initiatives; Establish a network of Elders and Helpers to assist in other First Nations languages and ceremonies; Provide technical and protocol support; Provide advice to all FNUniv Faculty and staff; Provide support to the Elders for ceremonial events and ensure protocols are recognized and respected; Provide the resources to interpret and translate English into the First Nation languages for non-First nation speakers, if required; Actively participate as a member of the Cultural Committee.

    Individuals must have demonstrated evidence of traditional teachings and First Nations Values by living through the teachings of our Ceremonial Keepers. Strong foundations in the areas of protocol customs. Elders Helpers will be recognized as ceremonial keepers and respected within communities.

    The individual must meet cultural needs and standards. Must have a good command of the English language and a high understanding of a First Nations language. Must have interpersonal skills to establish a network of Elder's and Elders Helpers with other nations including Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Sioux and Assinaboine. Must have good reading and comprehension skills.
