Potential Editorial Positions Available: Full-Time, Part-Time, Temporary and Contract positions may include:

    REPORTER/PHOTOGRAPHER
With a passion for storytelling, you perform the kind of shoe-leather journalism that keeps the public informed. You are responsible for reporting, capturing and investigating matters that impact the community. Your curiosity knows no bounds.

    NEWS EDITOR
With your thumb on the pulse of the community, you have the ability to quickly identify and assign stories to a team of talented journalists, providing them with support and guidance along the way. You are also responsible for proofreading as well as slotting content for our print products.

    ONLINE EDITOR
You have a voracious appetite for news and a knack for promoting stories to an online audience. You use your technical skills to enhance our digital storytelling abilities, engage readers on a variety of social media platforms, curate content and keep a close eye on analytics and the performance of content.

    MANAGING EDITOR
You are a born leader with the ability to manage, motivate and lead a team of journalists. You oversee newsroom operations, assign relevant and meaningful stories, and roll out editorial strategies and initiatives. You are an ambassador for the print and online publications — a trusted source of local news, connected to the community and keen on increasing readership and a loyal customer base.

    FREELANCE WRITER/PHOTOGRAPHER
You work closely with the managing editor or news editor to deliver stories and/or photos, on an as-needed basis. You are deadline-oriented and focused on producing content, as assigned. You are passionate about telling the community's stories and do so with journalistic integrity.

    COPY EDITOR
You're a stickler for detail who is well versed in CP Style. You identify and correct typos, spelling mistakes and grammatical errors with the skill to wordsmith a sentence for a reader's benefit.

    PAGINATOR
With creative flair, you piece together and layout news packages for print. You carefully manipulate and place the various elements, including headline, story and visuals, on a page to maximize the content's impact.

Depending On The Role, You Will:

    • Report, write, assign and edit in a breaking news environment, where the primary focus is on digital information.
    • Be able to adapt to an environment where news and information are updated frequently, and the work atmosphere demands urgency.
    • Understand the value of information - large and small - and the connection between what is being reported on and Metroland Media customers.
    • Report engaging stories and digital content for multi-platforms.
    • Understand how to explore, create, navigate and publish information using non-traditional and emerging information platforms.
    • Understand and demonstrate the use of digital tools and diversity of information such as social media links, embedded content and video work.
    • Travel throughout the community to capture events and information outside of structured work hours including evenings and weekends.

    Qualifications
    What we are looking for:

    • Diploma or Degree in Journalism or related field, including Applied Arts/Communications, or other relevant experience
    • Self-starter with the ability to exercise solid news judgment. Someone who thinks "web first."
    • Demonstrated skills using social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and posting content online.
    • Strong verbal and especially written skills with a strong knowledge of Canadian Press Style.
    • Effective organizational skills, ability to manage time and prioritize tasks appropriately.
    • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven and demanding environment.
    • A team-oriented individual that can build professional relationships with team members. Be comfortable with ambiguity and the ability to work collaboratively and independently.
