    Default job background
    Description

If you are looking for a fast-paced, positive team environment with professional growth potential, your search ends here. Our Business Law firm is currently offering a full-time position for a Commercial Litigation Associate who exudes positivity and high energy and possesses extensive experience in diverse business litigation cases.

Our law firm takes a "Business First, Legal Second" approach. Clients care about business results – making money, saving time, and protecting their reputation. This means our job is to deliver more than just a fancy piece of paper filled with legal 'mumbo jumbo'. So if you think your job is to help file a piece of paper to the courts without spelling mistakes, then this is not the right place for you. If you consider yourself more of an analytical wordsmith than a trusted advisor, then don't apply here.

If you don't know how to be frank with a client about litigation that's worth it vs. when it is not, then please don't apply. However, if you truly want to help people solve complex business problems and can approach conversations with maturity and sensitivity, then this position can be highly rewarding to you personally, professionally, and financially.

We are currently seeking a Commercial Litigation Associate who is passionate about solving complex business problems and can engage in discussions with maturity and sensitivity, guaranteeing that clients receive an unparalleled experience with our firm. We need someone who can help us independently take control of litigation matters in our firm while developing legal strategy and communicating effectively with clients while working through their cases. The most important quality you can possess is a great attitude and willingness to roll up your sleeves and get it done when needed.

While we strongly support personal and professional development, we do not have the time to teach you how an Oppression Remedy works, how to come up with creative solutions to litigious problems or overcome your fears of telling a client they have a losing case. However, we will provide you with all the training you need to know how to best help clients.

    Compensation:

    $132 hourly

    Responsibilities:

    This position will:

    • Manage independently a caseload of diverse commercial litigation matters from start to finish.
    • Draft statements of claims and defenses, submit motions, represent clients in court hearings, and facilitate negotiations for settlements with opposing counsel.
    • Offer strategic legal and business guidance to clients.
    • Uphold litigation deadlines and meticulously organize and maintain the firm's calendars logically and efficiently.
    Qualifications:

    Our ideal candidate will:

    • Possess a genuine passion for litigation and thrive on devising strategic solutions to business challenges.
    • Appreciate working with clients who are actually grateful for your help.
    • Show the ability to interact with different types of personalities – easygoing and difficult.
    • Show empathy towards clients, adept at calming their nerves during stressful situations.
    • Excel in handling high-stress cases characterized by tight deadlines and rapid turnarounds.
    • Bring extensive courtroom experience and a fearless attitude toward advocating for clients.
    • Showcase outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written, adapting seamlessly to various mediums.
    • Think on their toes and not be discouraged when things don't go as planned.
    • Understand the importance of policies and procedures.
    • Be a team player that consistently acts with respect and integrity.
    • Be tech-savvy, and comfortable navigating law firm systems and cloud-based software.

    These items are non-negotiable:

    • You must be available to work and be in the office Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. – Remote opportunities are available.
    • Must have 5+ years of experience as a commercial litigator as a lawyer of record.
    • You must have strong negotiation, and advocacy, and be extremely detail-oriented.
    • You should be able to ring off potential solutions and remedies available to a client immediately upon hearing a set of facts.
    • You must be comfortable working with various computer programs, databases, and systems.
    • You must be reliable, trustworthy, and able to maintain strict confidentiality.
    • You must be a positive, high-energy team player who is results-oriented – No Drama
    • You must care about something and have goals in life.
    • You must have an L1 Licence in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
    • Real-life experience and a few "battle scars" dealing with tough clients and messy lawsuits.
    • Entrepreneurial experience and overcoming a major obstacle in life so you know at your core what our clients are going through is a plus.

The caseload primarily revolves around assisting business owners in navigating various disputes they encounter. This encompasses collection matters, employment disputes, partnership disagreements, and other intricate situations that divert their focus from managing and expanding their businesses.

You will see a variety of matters. That will scare some people, but it will excite others. We will ask you to use your experience and expertise, in other areas of your life and practice, to benefit the clients that you're working for. Yes, you will actually be able to use your experience and intelligence in this job. If you're just looking to copy and paste the same collections complaint for every client, then this position isn't for you – we value creativity and expect candidates to devise unique solutions tailored to each client's specific needs.

We may also ask for your input in developing an acquisition strategy for a client if there's pending litigation. We may ask for your insight on drafting correct contract provisions for a growing business. I know, I know. Your job often relies on transactional attorneys messing up the contracts. Don't worry. There will still be plenty of work for you to do in the courtroom.

Prior experience in business litigation is required because we can teach you how we uniquely approach helping out clients, but we can't teach you how to move cases through the system or think strategically about potential solutions.

We are looking for a results-oriented team player who wants to have a positive impact on people's lives while helping us grow our business. The person we hire must bring a high level of energy, positivity, and a can-do attitude to work every day.

We are Big believers in the value of a team. If you prefer to be a "lone wolf," this job is not for you. We collaborate and support each other.

We are looking for individuals with fire and ambition, not excuse-making "clock-watchers" who will hide under their desks waiting to be told what to do all day long.

If you come from the school of thought that you need a second pair of eyes before proceeding, then you won't be happy here. We are looking for someone who has a penchant for problem-solving, can think on their feet, and will go out of their way to find a solution that works.

If you're drawn to a career path that we see as more of a "calling," one that offers performance bonuses, competitive benefits, extensive training, and ongoing professional development to continually refine your skills, along with complete transparency where accountability is paramount, and the satisfaction of truly making a difference in people's lives, then we encourage you to apply.

Compensation depends on experience and qualifications, with benefits including bonus opportunities, paid holidays, paid time off, and comprehensive health insurance coverage. If you're seeking a vibrant and positive team environment abundant with opportunities for personal and professional growth, your search ends here.
