    Duties

    GL-MAN-02 : Provides general repair, maintenance and building/installation of grounds, roads, trails and facilities/structures for the Coastal BC Field Unit.

    GL-MAN-03 : Provides semi-skilled and general maintenance, repair, building, and installation of grounds, roads, trails and facilities/structures for the Coastal BC Field Unit.

    Work environment

    This position provides excellent work experience and hand-on learning opportunities to support Parks Canadas maintenance program. As a member of the Asset Team you will support the overall goals of the Park Reserve by enhancing the visitor experience and engaging Canadians and other visitor from around the world in learning, enjoying and connecting to Canada natural and cultural heritage.

    The candidate must be willing to travel by vessel as a majority of the work days begin by loading equipment and materials and departing by boat to various locations within GINPR. This opportunity is a great way to experience and learn about the Southern Gulf Islands and get an in-depth understanding of the importance of Gulf Islands National Park Reserve

    Intent of the process

    This process will be used to staff GL-MAN-03 term position from approximately March to November, . This process will also be used to create a pool of qualified candidates to staff future potential GL-MAN-02 and GL-MAN-03 positions with various tenures in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve or other parts of the country.

    In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

    EDUCATION:
    (Applicable to GL-MAN-02 and GL-MAN-03)
    Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education training and experience.

    EXPERIENCE:
    (Applicable to GL-MAN-02 and GL-MAN-03)
    Experience in the performance of general maintenance tasks related to at least two of the following areas: grounds and landscape activities, equipment operation, minor carpentry and/or facility maintenance, operating hand and power tools, solid waste management.
    Experience of repair and maintenance of outdoor structures of building facilities or assisting semi-skilled or skilled trades people with building repair/construction.

    (Applicable to GL-MAN-02 only)
    General experience* in the operation, use and maintenance of manual and power equipment (lawn tractors mowers, chainsaws, outboard motors).
    *General Experience: Use of this type of equipment in a home/personal environment or use of the equipment in a job related environment over a period less than one year.

    (Applicable to GL-MAN-03 only)
    Significant experience* in the operation, use and maintenance of manual and power equipment (lawn tractors mowers, chainsaws, outboard motors).
    *Significant experience: Use of this type of equipment in a job related environment over a period greater than one year.

    ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:
    Experience in the operation and maintenance of gas powered 2 and 4 stroke landscaping equipment in a work environment.
    Experience operating small marine vessels.

    KNOWLEDGE:
    Knowledge of use of materials, tools, equipment used in construction and building maintenance.
    Knowledge of general Occupational Health & Safety practices including use of power tools and gas powered equipment.

    ABILITIES:
    Ability to operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools.
    Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    Ability to clean/maintain park assets such as day use areas, campgrounds, roads, trails, docks, structures.
    Ability to provide general labour support.

    PERSONAL SUITABILITY:
    Team player.
    Sound Judgment.

    ADDITIONAL OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATIONS:
    First Aid and CPR certification.
    Small Vessel Operators Certificate (SVOP).
    Radio Operators Certificate.

    Conditions of employment

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Obtain and maintain a reliability security clearance.
    Valid Class 5 drivers license.

    OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment.
    Willingness to work in a marine environment.
    Willingness to work weekends, statutory holidays, evenings and irregular hours.
    Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, adverse weather conditions, isolated locations and various means of transportation.
    Willingness to perform certain physical tasks as per job requirements (e.g., lift and carry up to 20 kg, reach above head).
    Willingness to work/stand/walk in an outdoor environment for a prolonged period of time.
    Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground
    (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.
