ABOUT THE ORGANISATION Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto-based multiservice organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices. Our mission is achieved through culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, childcare, educational, and employment services and youth development.


ABOUT THE POSITION The Assistant Supervisor for the Education Program, under the direction of the Manager - Youth Development & Education, will provide support and assist in overseeing all education related programs (including digital media programming) as well as facilitating the effective and efficient delivery of activities for Weekends of Learning (Increase Your Success Tutoring, Clubs, Steelpan) and camps.


What you will do:


  • Research and assist in developing curriculum for education programs and present findings/suggestions to Manager for input into implementation
  • Support volunteer Tutors / Facilitators to plan, organize and implement the established curriculum ensuring parent involvement
  • Establish and maintain relationships with youth workers, social workers, community engagement workers, teachers and education assistants etc.
  • Assist in supervising attendance and lesson plans to meet policies and procedures
  • Assist in coordinating Weekends of Learning and camp programming
  • Assist in developing and maintain written program procedures and activities for use by new program facilitators and volunteers
  • Discuss student's progress with students and their parents and provide assessments and reports
  • Participate in case management, consultation, and departmental planning activities
  • Participate in recruiting, orienting and training volunteers and placement students for programs
  • Outreach to children and youth in schools and in the wider community to increase participation in Tropicana's programs and special projects

What you need for this role:

  • Degree in education along with OCT registration
  • Experience teaching Ontario education curriculum
  • Knowledge of issues affecting academic achievement especially as they pertain to Black, African and Caribbean children and youth in Toronto
  • Valid police clearance vulnerable sector screening
  • Fluent in English advanced speaking, reading and writing
  • Excellent written, verbal communication; facilitation and presentation skills
  • Analytical skills to review data on students to adjust the curriculum to suit their learning abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate staff, volunteers and program participants
