Archaeological Research Associates Ltd. is currently seeking an experienced
Marine Archaeologist. This is an exciting opportunity for someone capable of leading their own projects to not only take on an upcoming diverse catalogue, but with potential to lead their own department within ARA.

This position is a _
permanent full-time position_. Workdays and hours may vary based on archaeological project, location and weather conditions during the season. Flex hours and work from home hours during the off season.

The Job:


Under the Ontario Heritage Act, a "marine archaeological site" is an archaeological site that is fully or partially submerged or that lies below or partially below the high-water mark of any body of water.

(O. Reg. 170/04, s. 1.)

  • Complete Stage 4 field work using appropriate techniques and methods according to site type and conditions
  • Ensure that all fieldwork meets the requirements of the Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists and associated Technical Bulletins, as issued by the Ministry of Culture and Multiculturalism
  • Manage, mentor, train Field Technicians
  • Professional and consistent engagement with First Nations communities
  • Complete accurate, detailed and comprehensive field documentation
  • Provide initial analysis of fieldwork completed and recommendations on further work
  • Professional development and additional tasks as assigned in the offseason

Skills:


  • Ability to identify marine cultural features
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety policies and procedures
  • Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Possess a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, prolonged walking and standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions
  • Excellent work ethic and teamplayer attitude
  • Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instructions
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of the use of modern devices and software (touch screen tablets, GPS devices, communications software, etc.)
  • Strong leadership skills

Requirements:


  • Experience in Marine Archaeology
  • Valid Professional or Research Licence with the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Multiculturalism
  • Comfort in water including snorkeling, use of wet/dry suits, underwater cameras, taking underwater measurements, basic shipwreck identification.
  • Previous experience in a field/marine archaeology supervisory role
  • A valid driver's license (minimum Class "G" or equivalent)
  • Ontario Pleasure Craft Operators License considered an asset
  • First Aid/CPR certification considered an asset
  • Required to drive company vehicles
  • Willingness to travel within Ontario, with the potential for outoftown/overnight work
