Position Summary:


The UHN Biospecimen Services Program (UHN BSP) is looking for a Research Associate I to be part of our team.

This role will require functional supervision of study assistants.


The UHN BSP includes the McCain GU Biobank (MGB), the Princess Margaret Cancer Biobank (PMCB) and the UHN COVID-19 Biobank.

After consent is obtained, team members procure, process and store research samples from patients with cancer, infectious and other diseases including COVID-19 or those who are undergoing organ transplantation.

The specimens are used by world-class medical researchers at University Health Network (Canada's largest academic hospital system), as well as by global scientific collaborators.


  • Participate partially or fully in protocol development/project design, setting of research goals, selection and development of procedures
  • Plan, implement and coordinate all aspects of data collection for biobanking substudies
  • Utilize study findings in the development and writing of grant proposals for new research activities
  • Allocate, monitor and track grant and external funding expenses
  • Assist in interpretation of results and preparation of material for presentation, publication, and/or grants
  • Critically appraise manuscripts and proposals of investigator
  • Present reports at scientific conferences and seminars
  • Participate in departmental, institutional or international seminars
  • Assess literature in the field of study
  • Mentor and functionally supervise junior biobank research staff, as well as biospecimen program trainees when applicable
  • Contribute to team inservice sessions
  • Play an active role in biobanking or clinical research conference planning
  • Perform studyrelated administrative tasks, where applicable

Qualifications:


  • Completion of Master's degree in Health or Science Related Discipline
  • 2 years experience in clinical trials, regulatory affairs, or research related project management (oncology and biobanking experience an asset) or Bachelors degree with 5 years experience
  • 1 year of leadership experience (training/mentoring others, quality reviews of others, team lead)
  • Proven skills in data management
  • Solid knowledge of preparing grant budgets
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent organization and prioritization skills, good computer skills, ability to learn quickly and work independently
  • Project management certification preferred
  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining attention to detail
  • Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks while adhering to timelines
  • Ability to work well both as a member of a team and independently
