The clinical veterinarian will ensure high standards for veterinary care of animals housed at both McGill Campuses, including animal facilities and laboratories.

The clinical veterinarian will be involved in several activities including but not limited to clinical veterinary medicine, health monitoring and Facility Animal Care Committee meetings.

The clinical veterinarian will meet or exceed established national and international quality standards for laboratory animal science, including Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines governing the care and use of animals in research, best practices, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and University policies.

The clinical veterinarian will work in close collaboration with researchers, CMARC staff, CMARC Director of Administration and Operations and CMARC Chief Veterinarian.

Primary Responsibilities


Performs clinical veterinary medicine (routine rounds; diagnosis, surgical procedures, treatment, progress monitoring of sick animals) including laboratories housing animals; gives instructions to animal caretakers, animal health technicians and research staff and students regarding care and treatment.

Participates in CMARC health monitoring and preventative medicine programs for all CMARC operated facilities and select affiliated institutions.

Participates in importation, exportation, and quarantine of all research animals to and from McGill and its affiliated animal facilities.


Provides expertise and assistance on animal research projects development including appropriate animal model selection, research design, animal sources, animal care, animal handling, analgesia, anesthesia, surgical and other animal procedures.

Involvement in the occupational health and safety program for vivarium staff.

Develops and improves methodologies (refinements).

Participates in ongoing improvements in animal and veterinary care standards, guidelines and techniques through interaction and communications with the animal care committee, senior administration, investigators, and animal care staff, to ensure best practices in the care and use of experimental animals.

Participates in the animal users training program. Actively participates in the development, implementation, and review of laboratory animal biomethodology workshops. Provides training on specialized techniques.


Actively participates in the development, implementation and review of institutional animal care and use policies, and standard operating procedures, particularly with regards to animal welfare, veterinary medicine, and techniques.

Participates to the activities of the Veterinary Subcommittee of the APWOC.

Provide professional expertise within a multidisciplinary team in accordance with organizational Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and CCAC guidelines.


Participates at Facility Animal Care Committee meetings, makes recommendations during the research protocol review and amendment process and participates in all related activities.


Incorporate the 3 R's of Replacement, Refinement, and Reduction in their daily decision-making, conduct of research-oriented activities and guidance to research staff.

May provide veterinary oversight to act as Alternate Qualified Person in Charge (AQPIC) for controlled drugs.

Attends continuing education programs - remains up to date on contemporary information in laboratory animal science.

Participates in emergency care after-hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience


Doctor of Veterinary Medicine diploma (DVM) and member in good standing with the Ordre des Médecins Vétérinaires du Québec with an experience of at least 3 years.

Be able to work within a team and possess excellent communications skills in both French and English.
