Are you passionate about environmental sustainability and naturalization projects? Do you have a technical background in horticulture, environmental science, or landscape architecture?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you
Our team is looking for a Landscape Technician 1 for Naturalization to support our Operations Program Delivery and Partnerships team with landscape management and environmental enhancement initiatives.
Some of your duties on the path to shaping the way we grow may include:

  • Select potential sites for naturalization and circulate them to internal and external stakeholders for feedback
  • Develop planting plans based on plant physiology and site conditions
  • Create maps of planting areas and plant lists for planting activities
  • Create plant tender list and assist with contract writing and evaluation
  • Perform site visits to ground truth site conditions and to advise on the suitability for naturalization
  • Respond to public and internal inquiries related to Naturalization initiatives in a timely manner, verbally or in writing
  • Develop and update Standard Operating Procedures and Hazard Assessments
  • Support communications and public engagement efforts related to Naturalization initiatives and Greener As We Grow
  • Monitor plant inventory in coordination with the City nursery
  • Research best management practices in relation to Naturalization, restoration, and reclamation
  • Perform site inspections in potential or current naturalized areas
  • Supervise contract work related to naturalization, including but not limited to watering maintenance and tree planting
  • Ensure contract work is tracked accurately and documentation is completed in a timely manner
  • Coordinate contract work to ensure conformance to contracts and City standards, while advising and/or resolving any discrepancies on the work
  • Review landscape plans, construction design circulations, and access permit requests
  • Provide education about Naturalization Initiatives to a wide variety of audiences
  • Support Root for Trees volunteer events as required
  • Perform data analysis, create presentations and draft reports as required
  • Support research projects and supervise Sustainability Scholars as required
  • Complete underground utility checks and ensure setbacks from infrastructures are followed
  • Develop and implement plant health monitoring procedures
  • Collaborate with other City departments on planting projects in naturalized areas
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completion of a 2year technology diploma with arboricultural, Forestry, Horticulture, Environmental Sciences emphasis or a related field
  • 2 years of experience in landscape, urban forest management, restoration or reclamation, contract and/or specification writing and interpretation of landscape plans and specifications related to the work assigned
  • Ability to interpret landscape contract/specifications
  • Knowledge of methods and standards common to contract specifications and implementations
  • Knowledge of arboricultural techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of best practices in naturalization, restoration and/or reclamation
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and experience in responding to public inquiries
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to establish priorities and effectively multitask
  • Ability to work outofdoors for extended periods and in unfavourable weather conditions as required by the work assigned
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform light to medium manual labour, such as carrying mínimal equipment to and from various worksites
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
