Responsibilities:


The Laboratory Assistant will be a member of the team that implements the practical laboratory program in the Department of Chemistry.

The position serves to create the environment and provide the materials and information necessary for the conduct of laboratory experiments in a large undergraduate laboratory program that serves approximately 5500 students on a yearly basis.

The Assistant is part of a team that is responsible for the preparation, safety, and operation of the laboratory program.

You will interact with and assist students, teaching assistants, and coordinators during and outside of laboratory sessions and will be the key point of contact for your area of responsibility.

Duties

  • Carry out daytoday lab tasks in collaboration with the lab coordinator
  • Assist and cosupervise first year lab students and teaching assistants
  • Available for evening labs from 5:30 10:00 PM as required by the lab schedule
  • Monitor lab equipment and apparatus as well as pre and post lab setups in accordance with the prescribed guidelines
  • Assist lab coordinator with maintaining record, input and audit lab grades, and etc.
  • Address student's lab related questions and resolve common issues during the lab session
  • Assist with online content and organization

Qualifications:


Education:


  • Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry

Experience:


  • 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting, examples: fulltime teaching assistant, laboratory technician, or researcher

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

  • Ability to work as part of a team and adapt to new assignments and duties within the undergraduate laboratory program.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated record of collaborative teamwork
  • Ability to demonstrate chemistry experiments and assist students during the lab
  • Ability to troubleshoot lab equipment or instruments
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Ability to work with detailed material and follow guidelines closely
  • Computer skills in Microsoft office programs e.g. Word and Excel
  • Should be familiar with virtual grading tools
  • Familiarity with video development software's will be an asset
