The Extension and Support Services Branch is one of three branches under the Agriculture Resource Division of the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

The Branch identifies and promotes agriculture and food production/processing systems that are sustainable and enhance the economic benefits to the province.

It maintains operations in all agriculture regions of the province to deliver Ministry programs and services.

The Branch works through a variety of strategic partnerships and is the primary point of contact for the Ministry's agriculture clients, including businesses, associations and local governments.


This position is part of the Land Use and Geospatial Unit which includes land use planning, GIS services, traceability programming, livestock premises identification, agricultural land use inventory (ALUI), and emergency response.

ALUI provides the current and accurate land cover and land use information that is a prerequisite for responsible and effective management of BC's agricultural land.


The Spatial Data Analyst provides leadership and expertise to the agricultural land use inventory program, including the development of advanced custom tools and processes to efficiently collect, compile, maintain, display, and distribute spatial and attribute inventory data.


The Spatial Data Analyst also works to address critical information needs of the branch and larger ministry by conducting advanced spatial analysis that explore a wide range of current and evolving issues and practices.

This position collaborates with a diverse team of GIS experts, agrologists, engineers, and land use planners across several units and branches.


Job Requirements:


  • Bachelor degree or higher in Geomatics and/or GIS, resource management, geography or computer science plus a minimum of two years *related experience; OR
  • A Technical Diploma in Geomatics and/or GIS plus a minimum of three years of *related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and *related experience may be considered
  • Related experience must include all of the following:
  • Experience developing methodologies and performing custom geo-spatial data modelling and complex geo-spatial analysis.
  • Experience consulting and providing expert geospatial advice to technical and professional staff.
  • Experience authoring geoprocessing tasks with Python and the ArcPy mapping module.
  • Must have been obtained outside of academic experience
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Experience preparing and presenting recommendations for land and resource based clients based on analysis or modelling results.
  • Experience with FME, SQL, GitHub, R.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcPro software suite.
  • Experience designing and developing data collections systems using web and mobile technologies.
  • Experience in a natural resource management field (e.g. planning, research, data collection).

Provisos /Willingness statements:

  • To have or be able to obtain a Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Willingness to conduct field data collection which may include travel by vehicle with overnight or extended stay in government approved accommodations.
