Position Title:
Settlement Counsellor (3 positions)


Reporting to:
Manager, Labour Market Orientation & Settlement Programs


Working Hours and Salary:


Two positions are full time temporary contract positions until December 31, 2024 with the possibility of extension pending funding approval.

(35 hours/week).

This position requires in person work from the office 5 days a week at 128A Sterling Road and within the community including refugee shelters, libraries, hotels and community centres.

Hours of work will be determined by the Manager. Our operation hours are 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. This position is required to work evenings and weekends.


Hourly rate:
$29.04 per hour

***: The Settlement Counsellor will provide needs assessment and referrals to appropriate services and programs based upon the clients' identified needs and goals. Will also provide information and awareness services to support and assist them in coping with the problems and issues related to everyday living, being in a new country and Community, (i.e. housing, transportation, language, government, community, social and health services, rights and obligations, etc.).

The Counsellor will Provide case management to clients with complex needs. Our settlement services are client centred and are provided both one-to-one and in groups. This position is dedicated to providing settlement counselling and case management to asylum claimants.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The framework focuses on understanding the context that creates and perpetuates a client's vulnerability to poverty, to support more active, strategic interventions.

It focuses on a client's assets rather than deficits. Assets can range from access to the basics of food, finances, and shelter to social networks to individual skill and knowledge to self-confidence, self-esteem, and personal resilience

  • Provide settlement counselling services, including assessment, information and referral, settlement plans, case management and service at NEW offices and other community partner locations.
  • Use initial assessment of asylum claimants to develop personalized settlement plans.
  • Provide case management and supportive followup.
  • Organize, plan and facilitate group sessions to address diverse clients' needs.
  • Develop and implement community outreach plans to promote our settlement services to asylum claimants.
  • Provide appropriate and useful information, orientation and support based upon each client's identified needs to assist and support them in understanding and accessing services, in making informed decisions about their settlement, and to help them transition in settling and understanding life in Canada and our community.
  • Provide appropriate and timely referrals to a wide range of community and government services and resources relevant to each client's identified needs, challenges and goals.
  • Provide assistance with form filling, informal counselling, interpretation/translation, advocacy and support as needed.
  • Followup and monitor client's progress, providing additional support and services, as needed.
  • Plan, organize, conduct and evaluate information/education workshops for newcomers, as assigned, as per funder criteria.
  • Create and maintain uptodate client files and records.
  • Maintain and input client data and services into statistical/data systems, as per Agency and funder criteria and best practices.
