Job Summary


The Manager, Non-Freight Revenue and Recoverable Accounting is responsible for leading multiple recoverable streams, including major government construction projects, to continuously maximize CN's expense reduction through recovery efforts directly impacting several key corporate metrics.

The incumbent oversees professional Accountants and Accounting experts, sets objectives as well as plans and drives initiatives.

The role is accountable for the adequacy and effectiveness of controls, ensuring accurate, timely, and complete recovery of Non-Freight eligible recoverable costs, contributing to the Order to Cash pipeline.

The role identifies Non-Freight cost recovery risks and develops and implements mitigation plans to safeguard these. The incumbent leverages their business acumen to identify and drive initiatives on further potential Non-Freight cost recovery opportunities.

The position acts as the change agent, recognizing opportunities for business process improvements and system enhancements, bringing further efficiencies and controls to the Order to Cash pipeline as well as identifying proper resources to collaborate in implementing changes that deliver value to the organization.


Main Responsibilities

Non-Freight Revenue and Recoverable Accounting Operations

  • Lead the Non-Freight Revenue and Recoverable Accounting team consisting of professional Accountants and Accounting experts
  • Set objectives, control priorities and workload, and drive results for optimal operational efficiencies
  • Coach and mentor team members allowing for continuous personal development
  • Oversee the Non-Freight Revenue and Recoverable Accounting operations governed by legal agreements, Transport Canada (TC), and the Department of Transportation (DOT) rules
  • Ascertain the accurate, timely, and complete processing of Non-Freight costs recovery
  • Provide expertise and guidance on Non-Freight accounting as well cost recovery practices, collaborating and interacting with, Engineering, Business Development, Collections, Property Accounting, Legal, Internal and External Audit, Financial Planning, Taxation, Procurement and Supply Management (P&SM), Information and Technology (I&T), and Accounting Development
  • Ensure efficient and effective dispute resolution

Control Adequacy

  • Identify Non-Freight cost recovery risks and implement mitigation plans to safeguard recoveries
  • Develop and implement adequate controls reinforced by appropriate governance and ensure their effectiveness to comply with Sarbanes Oxley (SOX), TC, and DOT rules as well as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Plan and oversee all Non-Freight audits to validate cost recovery completeness as well as accuracy
  • Take remedial actions based on audit findings

Initiatives, Process Improvements, and System Enhancements

  • Act as the change agent recognizing opportunities for system enhancements and business process improvements, bringing further efficiencies to the Non-Freight Revenue and Recoverable Accounting operations
  • Spearhead transformation initiatives to deliver operational efficiencies by furthering automation and business process improvements
  • Identify proper resources to cooperate in implementing changes that deliver value to the organization
  • Plan and deliver on key projects assigned by the Senior Manager, Recoverable Accounting

Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday.

Due to the nature of the role, the position must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.


Requirements:


Experience
Expense Recovery and Revenue Management

  • Minimum 5 to 7 years Expense Recoveryrelated experience or equivalent
  • Proficient in recognizing and addressing cost recovery risks
  • Proven track record to identify system enhancement and business process improvement opportunities
  • Experience in Systems, Applications and Products (SAP), with emphasis on Sales and Distribution (SD), Plant Maintenance (PM), Controlling (CO) and Financial Accounting (FI) modules
  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation
