The Cardiovascular Surgery Inpatient unit is a dynamic, fast paced 24-bed unit.

State of the art technology and pioneering of new procedures translate into continuous learning and professional development for all staff.

The UHN CV Surgery division has one of the few Canadian myectomy surgery programs, a large adult congenital cardiac surgery programs, and specialized programs such as transapical aortic valve replacements and Ventricular Assist Device (VAD).

Nurses manage patients with pacemakers, chest tubes, and tracheotomies. Ongoing educational programs support advanced roles such as dedicated telemetry nurse and management of patients with ventricular assist devices.

Acute Care Nurse Practitioners provide day-to-day care with the support of an actively involved physician group.

The majority of patients have diagnoses of cardiovascular disease requiring:

  • Aorto-coronary Bypass Surgery
  • Cardiac Valve Repair or Replacement
  • Adult Congenital Heart Repair
  • Ventricular Assist Device insertion prior to Cardiac Transplant


In support of the efficient operation of the unit, the principal responsibilities of the Ward Clerk include: performing reception responsibilities; providing clerical support; organizing and maintaining patient charts, electronic and paper information filing systems; performing patient administration functions including scheduling and coordinating appointments/meetings/events, maintaining written and/or electronic calendar/schedules, etc; coordinating unit administrative functions; ensuring the efficient operation of the unit, within the scope of authority; and performing other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.


Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Minimum one (1) year related clerical experience
  • General knowledge of office practices, processes, and procedures
  • Previous onthejob computer word processing/spreadsheet experience (MS Office)
  • Good data entry/keyboarding skills
  • Excellent organizational, time management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; good people skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills must be able to speak/write English fluently
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Ability to produce high quality work in accordance with Hospital standards
  • Ability to work effectively and safely when dealing with stressful situations
  • Knowledge of Emergency Assistance Codes
  • Completion of a recognized post secondary secretarial arts program at the certificate level or equivalent preferred
  • Experience working in a Microsoft Office software environment preferred
  • Experience working in a health care environment preferred
  • Previous experience working in a High Acute Unit preferred
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred
