    Are you an experienced Corporate Safety professional passionate about fostering a culture of safety and driving positive change within organizations? The People Services team at the City of Medicine Hat is seeking a Corporate Safety Specialist to join us This non-union position focuses on coordinating, advising, and implementing safety management systems across various departments. We're looking for an individual with a dedication to enhancing safety practices and emergency management procedures.

    Overview:

    As a Corporate Safety Specialist, you'll play a crucial role in promoting public and employee health and safety while mitigating corporate risks associated with our operational and capital programs. Collaborating closely with departments, you'll develop, implement, and evaluate safety management systems, ensuring compliance with legislation and standards. Our diverse portfolio offers exciting opportunities, spanning industrial settings in utilities, natural gas, and power generation.

    Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and maintain effective safety initiatives.
  • Develop relationships with external partners, contributing to broader safety objectives within the community.
  • Drive safety initiatives, identify needs, develop plans, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Lead investigations and provide guidance on safety management, fostering a culture of improvement.
  • Play a pivotal role in emergency management incidents, assuming various roles within the Incident Command System structure.
  • Review and develop emergency response plans and business continuity strategies.
  • Provide expert advice on Corporate Safety, Emergency Management, and operational risk management.
  • Conduct site inspections and audits to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Deliver training programs on safety protocols, including orientations for new employees and contractors.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on safety performance and incident evaluations.
  • What you bring:

  • Expertise in Health, Safety, and Emergency Management systems with a focus on practical application and continuous learning.
  • Strong communication skills to engage with stakeholders and provide clear guidance on safety protocols with the ability to write clear reports and manuals.
  • Adaptability and initiative to address safety challenges independently and drive improvement.
  • Ability to lead audits, inspections, and investigations.
  • Qualifications:

  • Certificate in occupational health and safety, emergency management, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience administering Health and Safety systems and Emergency Management systems.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act and Alberta Emergency Management Act.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation or ability to obtain.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Auditor qualifications through a recognized certifying body would be an asset.
  • Experience within the electrical and gas industry is advantageous.
