  • As a Community Development Specialist with Calgary Housing Company (CHC), you will use community development approaches to prevent and reduce the impacts of social isolation and poverty for Calgary Housing Company's residents. You will collaborate with other CHC staff to initiate, develop and implement strategic programs and initiatives.

Primary duties include:

  • Develop and implement strategic activities, partnerships and programs.
  • Understand and respond to needs, assets and barriers of the property and community, in partnership with residents, partners and other staff.
  • Collect and use data, research and information to inform priority areas and respond to identified community needs and opportunities.
  • Develop, plan and execute residentinformed and resident, partner, and/or community led programs and events to improve overall quality of life in the community.
  • Develop standard operating procedures, policies, guides, toolkits, templates and other resources to support the implementation of best practices across the business unit.
  • Contribute to the furtherance of antiracism, reconciliation and Equity, Diversion, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) initiatives and actions within CHC and the communities we work in.
  • Support collaboration among involved parties who have diverse backgrounds, needs and interests.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert on internal projects; provide community development expertise and advice to staff and partners.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Social Work, Community Development or a related human services field and at least 3 years of relevant community development experience working with marginalized groups, including people with low incomes.
  • Knowledge of community development models, community engagement, program development and social issues such as housing, employment, social inclusion, food security and mental health is required.
  • A Master's degree and/or designation as a Registered Social Worker (RSW) will be considered assets.
  • Evaluation, research and grant development experience will also be considered an asset.
  • Success in this position requires strong communication skills, the ability to collaborate and build partnerships and creative problem solving skills.

Working Conditions:

This position works mainly in an office environment with exposure to social issues and conditions which can potentially result in vicarious trauma or verbal abuse.

  • Compensation: Pay Grade 11 $ per hour

work week with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.
