NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK
The Risk, Claims and Insurance Specialist works very closely with the Associate Director, Internal Audit and Enterprise Risk Management, focusing on the risk management activities of the department which requires a significant degree of independence and judgement in the areas of risk management, insurance and claims management.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Claims Administration:
Understands and interprets insurance policies and applies judgement in initiating and processing claims.
Provides guidance on coverage for theft, loss or damage including property claims, fleet vehicle claims, vehicle vandalism claims, personal property claims.
Liaises with the Schools Protection Program (SPP) Claims Examiners and/or Independent Adjusters to provide information / documentation regarding claims.
Manages cost recoveries, including obtaining source internal cost information, liaising with RCMP and ICBC on related recoveries, and creating follow-up system to ensure collection.
Initiates financial transactions and monitors uninsured loss budget.
Insurance:
Manages the Schools Protection Program (SPP) Incident reporting system, including developing training material and training district employees on how and what to report, reviewing daily incident reports, escalating and following up on significant issues, maintaining incident report files and developing analysis of incident reports for management.
Manages policies and renewals for other district insurance including Optional Property coverage, Personal Accident Coverage, ICBC Garage Policy and ICBC Special Liability Policy, and Student Accident Insurance.
Produces insurance letters for Director's signature where required.
Risk Management:
Provides risk management advice for contracts including review of contract language, negotiating unacceptable indemnity and insurance terms, liaising with SPP for complex contracts and providing the Memorandum of Coverage where necessary.
Creates and maintains a master list of contracts issued with contact information.
Department General:
Maintains Internal Audit and Risk Management website.
Pre-screens legal requests and refers to the appropriate person / department.
Creates and maintains a calendar of key risk management communications to assist in safeguarding district assets.
Creates and maintains a schedule of key dates (i.e. insurance renewals, reporting deadlines, etc.).
Performs other duties as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of insurance industry, including property, casualty and automobile insurance and familiarity with policy wordings, endorsements, certificates of insurance and claims management.
