Summary of Role


Reporting directly to the Housing Manager, the Affordable Housing Locator is responsible for identifying available and affordable housing opportunities for families across shelter and housing programs.

The Housing Locator will work closely with the Shelter and Housing Case Management Teams, including Prevention and Diversion, and support families with housing searches.


Additionally, the Affordable Housing Locator will work from a trauma-informed and client-centered care perspective in line with the vision and values of the organization.

This role must be well-versed in understanding the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), along with landlord and tenant rights and responsibilities.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Family, Landlord and Community Interactions

  • Identify landlords and develop an inventory of safe and affordable housing that can be accessed with and by clients.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with landlords and property management agencies that are in the best interest of the shelter and housing program clients.
  • Maintain knowledge and relationships with Calgary area subsidized housing agencies.
  • Work collaboratively with Shelter and Housing program Case Managers regarding housing assessments and housing case plans.
  • Negotiate and advocate on behalf of clients with housing barriers that have prevented them from securing safe, affordable, and stable housing.
  • Coordinate and/or attend lease signings and walkthroughs with clients.
  • Serve as a resource for program staff and clients, offering information and guidance regarding the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA)
  • Coordinate and facilitate workshops about housing search tools and skills, rental preparation, understanding the RTA and tenant rights and responsibilities, and sustaining housing for families.
  • Coordinate and facilitate budget and financial management workshops for families in conjunction with case management teams.
  • Participate as a representative of The INN at SORCE (Safe Communities Opportunity and Resource Centre), networking, creating/maintaining partnerships and working collaboratively with other organizations in support of families and assist with system navigation.
  • Develop and maintain a network of strong community agency partnerships.

Documentation

  • Maintain appropriate documentation and case notes of support provided to families using established systems
  • HOMES, TEAMS, Program Drive folders.
  • Detail actions, activities and planning that has been completed with families.
  • Ensure all appropriate referral documentation is complete and on time.
  • Ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and safekeeping of agency records according to the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and when required the Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP)

  • Be familiar with all Inn from the Cold emergency procedures and maintain a safe environment following the Inn's standards, procedures, and protocols.
  • Develop and maintain respectful, cooperative working relationships with staff to contribute to the integrated, seamless delivery of services to families, landlords and communities.

  • Develop and maintain a network of strong community relationships.

Required Competencies

  • Ability to engage with and support families in their affordable housing search and guiding them through the rental process from viewings to lease signing and movein.
  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) and a thorough understanding of landlord and tenant rights and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of safe and affordable housing opportunities and ability to develop and maintain uptodate inventory of housing options.
  • Knowledge of the impact of homelessness on families, as well as common barriers to accessing/maintaining housing is an asset.
  • Culturally competent practices and understanding of the impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities, families and individuals.
