The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia's (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus.

The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Hours per week: 20


Compensation:
Tier 3 - $19.00 per hour

Position Purpose


Reporting to the President, the Strategy and Governance Lead is responsible for assisting and advising the President on matters of strategy, policy, governance, and other relevant areas.

This position is responsible for assisting the President and the rest of the Executive team on strategic projects that improve the AMS as an organization.

In addition, the position is responsible for supporting the President in liaising with AMS Council including answering questions from Councilors, assisting Committees with business, and creating presentations/briefs for Council.

The Strategy and Governance Lead also plays a key role in running referendums for AMS Council.

Applicants for this position should be passionate about leadership, strategy, and general organizational/political/corporate governance.

This position plays a key advisory role to the AMS President and can expect to work closely with the President on a large scope of items.


Responsibilities:


  • Coordinate strategic projects for the President and Executive Committee
  • Advise the President on both operational and strategic items.
  • Work with the President and the AMS Executive Committee on goal setting, policy initiatives, and strategic development.
  • Advise the President on strategic matters of crisis and public relations management.
  • Assist with the coordination and further development of strategic documents and plans.
  • Support the work of AMS Committees to research and create policies.
  • Undertake consultations with stakeholders on proposed projects
  • Assist the President with coordinating the running of AMS Council and other governance bodies.
  • Compile reports and dataanalytics based on research projects and mandates
  • Assist the President and AMS Council in running a successful referendum campaign.
  • Works with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience

  • Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges
  • Organized, punctual, and detailoriented.
  • Is well equipped to work in an advisory capacity on matters of student affairs.
  • Is passionate about the success of student led organizations.
  • Interested in understanding policy development and implementation of policies
  • Must have a keen interest and experience in research.
  • Experienced with project management
  • Proven track record of showing initiative
  • Able to work both in a team and individually
  • Experience leading a team on project development is an asset
  • Experience with strategic development is an asset
