Campus Counselling provides supports and resources to students, staff, and faculty with the aim of enhancing and promoting student mental health and well-being.

Working collaboratively with students to develop insights, identify strengths, and enhance personal resilience, the role of the Counsellor is focused on supporting students to achieve personal and academic goals, resolve challenges and live healthier lives.

Reporting to the Manager, Student Wellness and Counselling, the Counsellor provides a continuum of preventative, developmental, remedial and crisis intervention services.

The Counsellor works to actively connect students to on/off campus resources and plays a key role in collaborating with staff and faculty to support the ability of Sheridan students to flourish.

What You'll be Doing

Supporting the mental health and well-being of students in person and virtually, through the use of brief solution focused techniques to address issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, stress, trauma, low self-esteem, grief, isolation, relationships, and other mental health related issues;
Providing culturally responsive and trauma-informed counselling services, including supporting the creation and delivery of groups, workshops and psycho-educational lectures, for a diverse student population with a specific focus on supporting students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Colour (BIPOC) and/or part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community; drawing on feminist and anti-oppressive principles of practice and continually working towards a decolonizing framework;
Providing crisis intervention, suicide assessments, safety planning and referrals for "at risk" students;
Providing consultation to staff/faculty on an individual basis, offering variety of mental health training opportunities;
Working as a productive member of a multidisciplinary team; representing the department on committees and working groups within Student Affairs and the broader Sheridan community;
Providing competent, ethical, and professional mental health services through mixed modalities;
Working with external partners to best serve and support students with mental health issues and challenges;
Participating in the evaluation of services and research initiatives within Student Affairs.

About You

You are critically reflective practitioner who thrives working alongside students identifying as part of the BIPOC and/or 2SLGBTQ+ community, and you have a passion for fostering a sense of belonging, respect and equity for all members of our community, to educate and to amplify marginalized voices.

You demonstrate your student/client centered nature through the passion in your practice in working collaboratively with students to enhance and promote their mental health and well-being while assisting them in the achievement of personal and academic goals.

Master's degree in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, Education (or other closely related discipline);
2 years directly related work experience in a post-secondary, counselling service or community based mental health agency;
Member in good standing with respective regulatory body (Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), College of Psychologists of Ontario);

Experience working with students/individuals who identify as BIPOC and/or 2SLGBTQ+ living with depression, anxiety, strained social relationships eating disorders, self-injurious behavior, trauma, psychiatric diagnoses, difficult family dynamics, etc.

Knowledge and awareness of, the life experiences and needs of BIPOC and/or 2SLGBTQ students; Experience in mental health with the ability to administer, analyze and interpret assessments/tests/inventories;
Experience with diverse modes of counselling practice such as virtual service delivery, walk-in counselling, single session support etc.;
Demonstrated skills in the facilitation of therapeutic and psycho-educational groups, as well as experience in creating and delivering mental health workshops and training sessions;

Salary Range:
$67,893 - $117,697 (based on relevant educational qualifications and experience)
