About This Opportunity:


Nova Scotia Health is seeking expressions of interest for the position of Hospitalist Site Specialty Lead for QEII HSC within the Central Zone.

The QEII HSC Hospitalist Site Specialty Lead will function in a co leadership relationship with the site and service-based health services Director and Unit Managers to manage the daily operations of the Hospitalist Inpatient Services throughout the QEII campus.


The CZ Hospitalist Site Specialty Lead is accountable to the Head, Zone Department of Hospital Medicine, the Zone Medical Executive Director (ZMED), and Zone Vice President Operations (VPO), or their delegates.


The Hospitalist Lead also works in a co-leadership relationship with the Health Services Directors and Managers of Inpatient services for both sites (HI & VG).

The Hospitalist Site Specialty Lead will also have a direct working relationship with the QEII Site Medical Lead to address system quality/accountability, access and flow priorities.


Position Summary:


The Site Specialty Lead is responsible to:

Ensure that medical staff within the site are aware of, and compliant with, the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, policies and procedures, standard operating procedures, initiatives, and directives of the NSHA.


Work with the hospitalist staff at the site to ensure appropriate clinical coverage to meet the clinical and operational needs of the site; escalate as appropriate to Zone Department Head of Hospital Medicine.


Bring forward issues and perspectives of Hospitalist Medical Staff to the applicable Medical Site Lead, Zone Department Head for consideration and/or resolution.

Work in co-leadership with the Health Services Director and Health Services Managers across the applicable site.

Be visibly and consistently present on inpatient units across the site in keeping with NSH Operational Excellence expectations.


Participate in the monitoring of standards, quality, and utilization of resources of the site, and actively work to address any issues at the site or issues identified by the Medical Site Lead, Zonal Department Head, and/or ZMED.

Co-chair the hospitalist site's

quality improvement committee, if applicable.


Assist in managing site overcapacity issues by being the point of contact for site hospitalist medical staff, and initial point of escalation per site.


Support the management of surge capacity for all admitted patients including establishing and operationalizing service surge response, in alignment with dynamic resource mechanism.


Ensure service continuity is maintained through Department scheduling practices, including but not limited to establishing an equitable on-call schedule, approving and managing equitable vacation/CME time, and utilizing locums.


Act as the champion at the site for promoting and implementing best practices, policies and standards as determined by the NSH operations, programs and clinical service networks; this includes working across all departments at the site and participating in the implementation of policies and standards as well as impact evaluation; this includes ensuring successful implementation of site and zone initiatives including but not limited to those put forth by Site Leadership, the Department Head, ZMED, Provincial Access & Flow Network, Provincial Acute & Episodic Care Network.


Work with co-lead to create a plan to improve access and flow for the regional/tertiary site as well as surrounding area community hospitals.


Position Summary (continued):


Attend meetings of the Access and Flow Network Council and contribute to the Network by sharing local context and by participating in the development of strategies, policies and procedures that promote increased access and flow of patients.


Chair regular hospitalist site meetings with Minutes for sharing with the site's hospitalist group and with the Zone Department Head.

Attend other committee meetings as required or assigned by the Zone Department Head or ZMED. This includes mandatory attendance at the site's clinical affairs committee and co-chairing site's hospitalist medicine operations committee, if applicable.

Serve as Hospitalist Physician Lead for site's Emergency Preparedness activities.

Participate in any site or zone clinical services planning, as required.


Participate in addressing medical staff (including those involving respectful workplace and interpersonal matters) or operational challenges, in conjunction with operational co-lead, medical site lead and other relevant stakeholders; will work with the Zone Department Head and ZMED for any medical staff issues that involve formal complaints and Bylaw processes.


Actively participate in recruitment/retention activities for the site, including coordination of onboarding and orientation processes for new recruits to the site.

Participate in leadership development and demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and acquisition and refinement of leadership capabilities
