Your Opportunity:

Ponoka is a small town with easy access to Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary.

As a multi-site position you will have an opportunity to work in two facilities with the primary work location being at Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre.

Ponoka Hospital is an acute care facility with an active emergency department.

Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury is a large mental health facility with an active brain injury rehabilitation department.

The position includes days, weekends and home collections.


Description:


As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner.

You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Equivalent is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and Combined Laboratory and Xray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and MLT and CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation.

Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered.

If hired, you will be required to complete on-the-job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology).

The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility.

You will be required to complete these training requirements within your probationary period, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collective agreement.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Equivalencies may be considered. Cardiology training and experience including ECG's and Holter Monitors.


All blood collection procedures including:
venipuncture, micropunctures, blood culture collection as well as collections on all patient ages including newborns, pediatrics and geriatrics. Urinalysis training including recent macro and micro urinalysis experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years experience in a healthcare setting is preferred. Familiar with Clinitek Advantus. Recent experience with Muse and Cardioday. Recent and relevant experience with Epic Beaker. Current registration with CSMLS. Ability to communicate effectively in English. Good organizational skills and ability to assume responsibility. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently and promote teamwork.
