Summary


Reporting to the Associate Director of Administrative Excellence Centre 6 (AEC 6), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Communications Officer is responsible for the annual planning and delivery of a broad range of services for the following McGill clinical departments: Surgery; Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; Anesthesia; and Critical Care.

The Advisor leads the creation and implementation of plans, communications campaigns and materials in English and French in support of the department, Faculty and University missions and goals.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement communication plans and promote the priorities, excellence, and accomplishments of AEC 6 departments to stakeholders, including internal and external audiences, alumni and friends.
  • In collaboration with department Chairs and local leadership, responsible for identifying and exploring communication needs for the departments of: Surgery; Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; Anesthesia; and Critical Care.
  • Provides professional expert advice and creative solutions to local leadership in support of each department's priorities, on an ongoing basis.
  • Collaborates closely with the Chairs, Associate Director of Administration, and Program and Unit Directors to create content that promotes the departments' academic excellence in Quebec, Canada and internationally, as well as to stimulate pride and informationsharing internally.
  • Creates targeted campaigns in support of departmental education and research missions, leveraging a range of communication platforms and tools, such as web, enewsletters, social media, esurveys, media pitches, live and virtual events, and video; evaluates campaign success.
  • Creates/Conceptualizes written and visual content for internal and external audiences, ensuring it is aligned with Faculty and University visual identity and quality guidelines.
  • Manages the selection and the nomination for internal and external faculty and staff awards, and promote their excellence across all platforms.
  • Promotes events, such as conferences, annual retreats, distinguished lecture series, fundraising and recognition, in support of priorities, including the creation of promotional and event materials and coordination of logistics for invitations, venues, catering, and virtual and audiovisual needs, as well as followup surveys and analysis.
  • With secondary reporting to the Director, Communications, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, collaborates with the Faculty's Office of Communications to ensure coherence, to exchange on priorities, to promote the departments in Faculty, University and external media, and to identify other opportunities.
  • Liaises with the Faculty and McGill communications communities and/or external suppliers for additional support, as appropriate, such as web, graphic, translation, photographic, audiovisual, event or other; ensure that the services provided meet required standards.
  • Oversees communication projects led by other department members, including work conducted by external suppliers, to ensure McGill and Faculty visual identity and quality guidelines are maintained.
  • Oversees and administers budgets for projects under the Communications Advisor's purview.
  • Participates in special projects, both departmental and Facultywide.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to create communication materials on a wide range of topics and to edit and print online publications.
  • Proven track record of successfully developing and implementing communications plans, ideally in a higher education or nonprofit organization.
  • Superior written and excellent spoken communication skills in English, with strong French skills
  • Demonstrated ability to create compelling content, edit and publish online.
  • Detailoriented, with strong organizational, prioritysetting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize large, high profile events, with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to liaise with internal and external clients, and to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Ability to be an influencer and to connect with influencers. Expertise in Photoshop and InDesign is an asset.
