POSITION MANDATE

Oversees and supports the technical aspects of projects, with design authority and responsibility for execution. Projects are at a systems level or have significant technical requirements. Investigates and solves complex technical problems. Provides technical direction in support of project activities. Reviews processes and determines the optimum process for each client application. Mentors junior professionals.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Technical

· Stamps drawings and documents in their scope of practice.

· Undertakes studies following discussion with clients. Collects system information, performs modelling using system data, explores options and implications, assesses results, etc. Prepares technical reports.

· Creates designs, from one piece to fit into a system, to whole systems. Sign off on designs.

· Ensures the technical integrity of projects. Analyzes, evaluates and plans methods of approach, and organizes the means to achieve client solutions for complex technical problems.

· Specifies material, equipment and supplies required for technical projects.

· Develops and applies advanced scientific and/or engineering theories, methods and research techniques in the investigation and solution of complex technical problems.

· Interprets and evaluates test data and results of investigations, makes appropriate recommendations.

· Recommends corrections in technical analyses and design to ensure safe project completion.

· Undertakes difficult design and modification projects.

· Provides technical expertise as required.

Project Management

· Develops project plans, schedules and estimates. Handles procurement requirements and documentation.

· Oversees project work including juggling team and customer timelines and monitoring the budget.

· Provides technical advice and guidance, with emphasis on safety.

· Liaises with the customer throughout the project.

· Manages inter-departmental communications and relationships in support of specific project needs.

· Completes own work safely and ensures safety standards are met.

Oversight

· Provides technical leadership and mentorship to other engineers and designers.

· Reviews and approves work of junior engineers and designers.

· Assigns and delegates tasks to other engineers based on project requirements.

Sales/Customer Relations

· Communicates with outside clients, suppliers and co-workers including reports, quotes, emails, etc.

· Keeps customers informed on new technologies as well as technological and industry best practice opportunities that may contribute to their operations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The position requires an undergraduate degree in Engineering from an APEGS recognized Engineering Program and a current Professional Engineer designation as well as 15+ years of engineering experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

· New sites and customers grow into more work and long-term customers.

· Suggestions for technical solutions and/or project management improvements support the achievement of project outcomes.

· Compliance with relevant policies, procedures, standards and practices, legislation and codes meet expectations.

JOB SCOPE

Provides expert engineering advice and services. Requires extensive knowledge and applied skill in dealing with complex technical problems or requirements, and mentors others in technical matters. Possesses extensive experience and capability gained through in-depth involvement in engineering assignments and can use this expertise to function independently and proficiently on TPS customer sites or when overseeing the technical aspects of projects. Routinely addresses situations where the problem is clear but the solution is not and is expected to apply a broad knowledge of processes specific to engineering principles and practices to resolve them. Holds sole responsibility for own decisions and actions including professional sign-off. Acts as an internal consultant to managers and leaders where recommendations can influence project direction and performance. Planning often involves coordination of service delivery through others, and integration of service delivery across departments, requiring the establishment of numerous, strong working relations.

EFFORT

Applies the expertise and effective communication skills to resolve complex technical problems and provide counsel to customers and/or internal contacts. Exercises the latitude to determine exceptions to standards and recommend process and other improvements based on emerging trends. Attention to detail and the need for concentration over sustained periods are required for several of the tasks assigned. Juggles multiple projects, details and deadlines. The workload is heavy and constant, and all work involves a deadline. Interruptions are the norm. Innovation is required when solving problems and exploring options. The ability to deal effectively with a wide range of contacts including customers, troubleshoot and make decisions on a variety of day to day issues practically and expediently are key factors for success in this position. Provides guidance or work direction to individuals on projects including assigning work to others and monitoring to ensure that established goals are achieved. Provides feedback and guidance as required, referring recurring professional or behavioral issues to the Manager.
