This Manager plays an integral role as a member of the Nuclear Operations management team, contributing to the development of business plans to make the department more flexible, cost-effective and responsive to client needs.
Job Duties:
Isotope Production
Direct all aspects of Isotope Production at the McMaster Nuclear Reactor and other external facilities where McMaster isotope production processes have been deployed.
Ensure that all processes associated with isotope production are monitored and functionally correct to provide necessary quality and yield parameters to customers.
Schedule alternate suppliers to deploy and maintain McMaster isotope production technology.Assess production data on an on-going basis and develop and implement changes to affect increases to product yield and quality.
Develop isotope production and dangerous goods documentation including updates to existing policy, procedures, checklists, and training materialDevelop original procedures to support the production of new client products.
Customer Support
First line of contact with all existing and new customers for the production and delivery of isotope products. This includes resolving time sensitive complaints for customers across the world.
Consult with customers on production needs and ensure facility capacity to meet required targets.
Manage and direct customer requirements at both facilities.
Works with the Manager, Commercial Operations to analyze new isoptope products and determines cost of production, staffing and equipment needs and scheduling.
Assist in pricing for new isotope contracts, in collaboration with the Directors of Nuclear Operations and Commercial OperationsCo-ordinate all customer requests, including last minute orders and intricate shipping logistics.
Facilitate audits brought forward by customers to demonstrate quality systems and standards.
Operations
Develop schedule of production activities across multiple sites to ensure compatibility with customer demands, reactor operations, quality assurance activities and international shipping schedules.
Develop and provide the necessary documentation in support of the transport of dangerous goods.Manage the shipping schedules for both MNR production as well as off-site production operations in compliance with national and international Transport of Dangerous Goods regulations.
All of the goods have a defined half-life, such that products are constantly decaying. Inventory management and detailed scheduling of all facets of the production process are critical.Contributes to the specification for new equipment to support new product development.
Ensures production equipment is in good working order and monitors equipment performance to make recommendations for maintenance and replacement.
Develops production and inventory forecasts.Monitors employee and facility emissions to ensure ALARA principles are applied. Hazards related to radioactive material, potentially high radiation fields, and toxic chemicals may be present.
Provides written direction to staff, where procedures are required.
Financial Management
Develops annual operating budget for Isotope production.
Project financial requirements for the period 1-3 years.
Controls expenditures and monitors performance against budget.
Provides cost estimates for the development of new isotope products and for controls the costs for the implementation of new isotope production.
Human Resource ManagementEnsures provision of services by hiring, training and carrying out all supervisory responsibilities with respect to the unit.
Monitors employee performance, and provides regular performance feedback as well as prepares and performs annual performance appraisals for unit staff.
Ensures compliance with Human Resources policies and procedures.Develop shift schedules to meet production needs.
Staff Training
Assess training needs of employees and provide training and qualification programs to ensure staff are adequately prepared to carry out assigned tasks.
Recommended staff to the Director for Nuclear Facility CertificationProvide input into training material, as the system matter expert in isotope production
Ensures personnel are properly qualified and trained for all aspects of isotope production (i.e. isotope handling, radiological protection practices, shipping of dangerous good, production processes, quality assurance, high vacuum techniques, etc.)
Ensures that technical bulletins and appropriate training are provided to production staff as required.
Strategic Planning
Develops short and long-term plans for the Isotope production unit to ensure effective and efficient use of all operational resources.
