About Volt
Volt Hockey is a fun adapted form of hockey that was created to support people living with a variety of upper and lower mobility limitations.
The specially designed hockey sport chair is battery operated and controlled with a joystick and played in a gym or on any dry, smooth surface.
Volt has opened the door for more people living with disabilities and mobility limitations to play a hockey sport.Job Duties
Your commitment to this role is approximately hours per week doing the following:
- Approximately 7 hours coaching. This includes one to two week day evening sessions for 1.5 hours each; and two weekend sessions on a Saturday for 3 hours total) and chair maintenance (checking over the chairs for loose bolts; putting air in the tires; plugging in the chairs following session etc.
- Approximately 1 to 2 hours of planning weekly sessions
- Approximately 1 to 2 hours per week to attend one evening meeting (online) with the other Volt Hockey coaches from across the province to share skill building exercises and plan your weekly sessions.
Note:
the facilitator/coach will be working with children/youth/adults who are living with various types of disabilities.
Coaching:
- Ensuring familiarity with the unique electric Volt Hockey chairs, and rules of the game
- Learning to care and maintain chairs
- Learning to coach this particular sport for demonstrations, "try it days" and tournaments
- Plan training sessions using and adapting existing manuals
- Lead children and adults through skill development exercises
- Ensure a safe and inviting environment for activity participants and their families
- Adhere to safe operating procedures of the Volt Chairs
- Create a positive team environment with participants
- Work cooperatively with volunteers to deliver Volt Hockey
Administration:
- Promoting Volt Hockey by attending sportrelated events and demonstrating the sport
- Maintain individual/group attendance and progress records
- Maintain the chairs and other materials, ensuring they are properly charged, kept clean and in proper operating condition.
- Attend weekly Volt Hockey meetings (online) with Volt coaches across Alberta.
- Recruit, interview, orient and supervise volunteers.
Requirements:
- Experience in sportrelated and/or coaching positions
- Must be flexible and able to adjust quickly for example "Try It" days and events are often unpredictable for ages and numbers of participants.
- Ability to work with various ages (6 years to adult)
- Experience working with children/youth with varying disabilities an asset
- An understanding of competitive sport and team development
- Knowledge/Experience with adaptive sports
- First Aid/CPR certification an asset
- Strong organization and time management skills
- Dependable and reliable
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to move Volt chairs from storage to play area, set up borders and nets
- Capable of giving instruction and modeling use of the equipment and instruct on use of the equipment and the skills needed to play the sport
Note:
Before applicant is officially hired, they will be required to submit a criminal record check/vulnerable sector verification check.
