Eligibility for this competition is RESTRICTED to all regular/fixed-term OPS lawyers, current lawyer redeployment list members and current articling student hireback pool members.

The Legal Services Branch of the Treasury Board Secretariat has an immediate opening for

one junior litigation counsel to join the Labour Practice Group, which represents the Crown as the Employer on labour and employment matters. This position requires exceptional client service skills and a demonstrated ability to handle arbitrations and litigation matters in an exciting and innovative legal environment.

What can I expect to do in this role?: You will:

  • Act as counsel in litigation proceedings before a range of administrative tribunals and courts, including the Grievance Settlement Board, the Public Service Grievance Board, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, and the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario
  • Provide strategic legal advice to all government ministries and various Crown agencies on significant labour relations, employment law, policy and human resources issues, including human rights, health and safety and disciplinary responses
  • Provide legal advice and support on collective bargaining files
  • Provide written and oral legal opinions

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:
Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario


Knowledge and Skills:


  • Litigation background and experience in labour and/or employment law
  • Experience assisting counsel before labour arbitration boards and tribunals
  • Analytical skills in order to assess legal implications of government policy and practices
  • Organizational skills and ability to successfully manage a highvolume litigation practice
  • Proven ability to work independently and provide exceptional client service
  • Proven oral and written communications skills as well as the flexibility and the ability to provide innovative solutions to complex problems
  • Proven ability to anticipate and respond to the client ministry's needs
  • Professional judgment, analytical, problem solving, negotiation, conflict resolution and communication skills
  • Proven ability to produce highquality work under tight deadlines with changing and competing demands
  • An enthusiasm to actively promote branch collegiality and a culture that values everyone's contributions and
  • The ability to promote a collaborative, diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace.
