Position Title

  • Innovation Centres Research Technician
    Position Summary
  • The Innovation Centres Research Technician supports the activities of the Manufacturing and Energy Innovation Centres both from a technical and business perspective. This position will prepare business and research cases based on input from the Director, Manager, Engineers, and Specialists. This information will support targeted growth areas. In addition, based on specific skill sets of the incumbent, this position would be able to produce, fabricate and manufacture products for the Innovation Centre and/or Red Deer Polytechnic projects, providing innovative expertise that incorporates new trends and technology in the market. Products may include design concepts (i.e. drawings, CAD diagrams, 3D scans, software development, data analytics, etc.) or actual physical objects. The incumbent will also assist in maintaining the Innovation Centre equipment and be proficient on the operation of such equipment. They will be an integral part of the Applied Research and Innovation department.
    Position Responsibilities

Market Intelligence and Research

  • Conducts thorough market intelligence and research documents based on direction from Director, Business Development Specialist, Applied Research Specialist and/or Engineers
  • Summarizes and presents the results of research
  • Provides recommendations/information to Director for use in strategic planning based on research efforts
  • Prepares research and business cases in collaboration with Innovation Centres team members
  • Provides information to Director for strategic planning
  • Works independently to gather market intelligence and research as well as technical tasks and find solutions

Technical Project Support

  • Communicates clearly with the project manager and customer as to the purpose, plans and outcomes of the project for assigned projects in collaboration with Technicians
  • Provides expertise in determining best route to take to achieve the customers objective
  • Writes the scope of work for projects
  • Assists with costing and determining the timeline of projects
  • Clearly communicates the progress of the project
  • Tracks project finances, including invoicing
  • Sets up, tests and disassembles a variety of equipment
  • Designs and fabricates simple and complex mockups, incorporating new developments and innovations in the market

Maintain and support the lab equipment including software

  • Tracks material usage and work orders for related projects in the Division and for the Centre for Innovation and Manufacturing
  • Procures materials, equipment, supplies and resources as necessary
  • Assists with the setup of lab projects when required

  • Actively participates in training and professional development activities in accordance with goal and development plan and as they become available
  • Actively acquires knowledge and regularly familiarizes self with policy and procedure in order to meet user needs immediately without misleading or misdirecting students to services
  • Actively acquires knowledge and skills related to this position

Required Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of postsecondary training, completion of a community college certificate including trades apprenticeships or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting literature reviews, summarizing, and incorporating concepts of research
  • Ability to actively engage and collaborate effectively with a broad range of individuals ranging from internal stakeholders to business partners to external consultants is critical to the success of this position
  • Effective analytical, research, and problemsolving skills with an attention for detail
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills for effective conflict resolution and relationship building
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, keeping in mind the needs of business and prioritizing multiple clients demands
  • Ability to design, plan and fabricate prototypes
  • Ability to selfmanage and work independently with mínimal supervision
  • Demonstrated experience in an entrepreneurial environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Journeyman, Red Seal, CET would be an asset
  • Over Three years up to 5 Years of experience

  • Starting at $34.08 per hour
    Benefits and Compensation Information
  • An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
