Description

Under the General Supervision of the Information Systems Project Leader (Infrastructure), the Information Security Specialist is primarily responsible for administering the IT Security Program for WPS.

This position is responsible for the design, configuration, implementation and maintenance of security-related systems, processes, and software products, and the formulation of technical architectures and Information Technology Security standards.

The Information Security Specialist leads/participates in IT threat risk assessments and IT security incident investigations, recommends appropriate mitigations and remediations, and develops IT security roadmaps and policies.


Secondary duties include daily monitoring, modification, testing, documentation, and problem resolution of Network Switches, Firewalls, Wireless Communication devices, Servers, Operating Systems, System Software and other Hardware/Software, including cloud technologies.


As an Information Security Specialist
you will:

  • Lead and administer the IT Security Program for the Winnipeg Police Service
  • Research and test information technology and provide technical consultation on system/network/wireless communication hardware, software and cloud technologies
  • Maintain systems/network hardware and software at local and remote sites, to provide an infrastructure for WPS's information technology and wireless communication needs.
  • Analyze and resolve system/network operational problems
  • Document the technical and operational environment

Your education and qualifications include:


  • University Degree in Computer Science (or related field), or College Diploma in Business Information Technology (or related field) with demonstrated equivalent amount of experience
  • Minimum of 48 months progressive experience in information technology with a focus on Information Security and Networking within the last 5 years, preferably in a senior role
  • Advanced working knowledge of and experience implementing Information Security methods and procedures
  • Extensive working knowledge of LAN/WAN infrastructure technologies such as TCP/IP, networking/routing, Ethernet, firewalls, wireless LANS, VPNs, and switching VLAN designs and setups
  • Ability to plan, design, lead, conduct through a business and technical riskbased approach
  • Ability to evaluate Information Security incidents and risks (including Cloudbased ones), and recommend appropriate mitigating controls and solutions
  • Ability to evaluate results, assess severity and probability of risk, determine priorities, propose mitigations/solutions, and assist with/implementing appropriated remediation activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IT network security scanning technologies
  • Ability to conduct IT Security Threat and Risk Assessments
  • Thorough knowledge of an internal PKI, including issuance/template configuration/revocation for user and machinebased authentication
  • Knowledge of certificatebased login standards such as PIV, an asset
  • Ability to manage a RADIUS/NACbased solution for user and machine authentication policies
  • Ability to manage users/groups/roles within Azure AD
  • Thorough knowledge of Azure security controls, particularly conditional access, multifactor authentication, and role assignments
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computer systems software, hardware, and techniques
  • Demonstrated experience in the configuration and operation of PC based software for network operations
  • Ability to install, support and research network and security related infrastructure solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze system problems and to carry out corrective actions
  • Ability to plan and implement components within largescale systems implementation projects
  • Ability to successfully multitask with frequent interruptions and complete assignments in a timely manner, coordinate multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision, developing and implementing new procedures
  • Knowledge of firewall and networking technology, including Fortinet FortiGate, TCP/IP addressing and port assignments
  • Knowledge of Network Access Control/ (NAC)/RADIUS systems, such as Aruba ClearPass
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Certificate Authority
  • Knowledge of Microsoft server and desktop operating systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory Management
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve
  • Knowledge of network switch technology
  • The ability to establish and maintain a positive, respectful, safe and healthy work environment that supports the physical, psychological and social working relationships with members at all levels in a team environment

Minimum requirements:


  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • No involvement in any criminal activity within the last two years (including illegal drugs)
  • No criminal record for which a Pardon has not been granted
