This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).


In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of: $66,167 $110,279.


Location - This role is in-person with work primarily taking place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Position Summary


The incumbent will be a self-starting leader who will draw upon their prior experience and discipline-specific knowledge in order to foster and promote the health, safety and environment responsibilities identified in university policy and in alignment with direction from the University's Health, Safety and Environment Department.


Duties
Specialized Subject Matter Expert

  • Development and maintenance of the university's Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS) within the Faculty of Science and ensures Science's own safety and risk management program aligns with it and evolves as necessary.
  • Provides laboratory and general safety technical and advisory services to the Science community including chemical, biological, radiation, occupational, fire and life safety.
  • Oversees laboratory safety inspections, lab closeouts and certifications.
  • Oversees compliance matters with regulatory and university laboratory and general operation health and safety practices.
  • Oversees worksite inspections and certifications as required.
  • Develops, implements and executes Science's HSE and risk management programs.
  • Liaises with Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) regarding specialized hazardous waste disposal and management.
  • Mitigates health, safety, environmental and regulatory risks to our people, institution and environment.
  • Oversees, undertakes & advises on Science safety training programs.
  • Collaborates and advises with senior leaders and researchers to accommodate new/unique projects and initiatives.
  • Chairs the Faculty HSE Committee and participates on behalf of the Faculty of Science in committees and groups such as Senior Administrators Committees.
  • Participates and advises on department/unit safety committees as an exofficio member, as needed.
  • Participates in oncall service, responds to incidents and emergencies and supports the university's Crisis Management Team.
  • Responds to incidents and contributes to and supports serious incident investigations led by HSE.

  • Provides clear and understandable advice and recommendations based on experience and knowledge to support informed decision making by leaders.
  • Gains the trust of leaders and other team members by providing information and advice in a transparent and professional manner.
  • Identifies key issues and clarifies/defines problems. Provides recommended solutions.
Strategic Thinker

  • Contributes professional and managerial expertise to the development of plans, objectives, solutions, policies and procedures.
  • Excellent knowledge of business process and risk management principles and guidelines (including ISO31000).
  • Knowledge in the area of emergency preparedness and business continuity planning theory and practice.
  • Ability to devise risk mitigation, risk transfer, and insurance strategies to protect University assets and personnel.
