Gardener:


(Full Time)
The Tsawwassen First Nation Lands Department is adding an enthusiastic, hardworking Gardener to their Public Works team.

The Gardener will be under the supervision of the Public Works Foreman and will be responsible for performing gardening horticulture in public areas across Tsawwassen First Nation including garden beds and in all Parks and Playgrounds.


Essential Functions:


  • Performs horticultural activities such as planting and maintenance of plant material, trees, shrubs, turf areas, street landscaping walkways and public buildings
  • Works with Public Works Foreman to ensures irrigation systems are functioning and watering schedules are set appropriately
  • Manage and maintain (weed, prune and trim) trees and plants
  • May be responsible for or participates in the preparation of reports including hazardous tree evaluations, cost estimates and budget preparation, work time estimates and landscape inspection
  • Identification of noxious weeds/plant and eradication techniques or options
  • Assists in ordering plants, materials and equipment
  • May be asked to design horticultural displays and may participate in the design process of parks
  • Operate related equipment
  • Ensures personal and coworker safety by closely following policies, procedures and safety regulations
  • Works with Facilities, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Utilities, Engineering and other TFN departments as well as external contractors
  • Assists crew members in performing their duties
  • May be asked to respond to inquiries from the public
  • Performs other duties as required

Working Conditions:


  • Heavy manual outdoor work in all types of weather conditions and limited office work

Qualifications or Experience:


  • Minimum 5 years' experience in landscaping and the gardening industry
  • Valid BC Driver's License
  • Valid Pesticide Applicator's License (Landscape category) or a willingness to complete required training and certifications
  • Level 1 First Aid (or a willingness to complete it)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of techniques, materials and equipment used in gardening and landscaping work
  • Completion of Grade 1
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with crew members and others
  • Deals tactfully and courteously with the public and staff
  • Strong organization skills
  • Accurate mathematical and budgeting skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of blueprints, sketches and other specifications
  • Works independently as well as in a team environment
  • Knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, regulations and bylaws
  • Physical capabilities necessary to carry out the duties of the position
  • Previous horticultural experience and training as a gardener
  • Willingness to complete a criminal record check
  • May be required to work overtime and weekends
  • Operation of equipment related to snow and ice control would be an asset

Wages:
Competitive pay commensurate with qualifications with excellent benefits including enrolment in the BC Municipal Pension Plan


Hours of work:
Monday to Friday 7:00am to 3:30 pm

Education :
Other trades certificate or diploma
Experience : 5 years or more
