BASIC FUNCTION:


WBCO's Housing Initiatives Coordinator oversees the implementation of the goals, objectives, priorities and housing initiatives recommended in our community's planning documents and as directed by the strategic priorities outlined by WBCO's Board of Directors.

The Housing Initiatives Coordinator works with residents, stakeholders and government to support housing activities in the West Broadway neighbourhood.


JOB OBJECTIVES:


  • To coordinate the process and implementation of the _West Broadway Housing Plan _ in association with local residents and housing stakeholders, and to carry out retrospective evaluations of the implementation of these plans.
  • To instigate and maintain positive, meaningful relationships with residents, stakeholders and government representatives as part of WBCO's overarching organizational objective of strengthening the social fabric, diversity and livability of our community.
  • To provide initiatives through which the community can address local housing needs and maintain or strengthen housing related assets.
  • To promote and assist environmentally and socially sustainable housing rehabilitation and infill projects, which will provide housing that is affordable, healthy and universally accessible, in partnership with local stakeholders and residents.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Housing Initiatives Coordinator will be responsible for the following activities:

Housing Plan

  • Facilitate public consultation meetings on neighbourhood housing priorities and implement the housing planning process, as required
  • Support local housing revitalization activities
  • Implement WBCO's Housing Development Policy for housing development and facilitate funding endorsements for nonprofit and private sector housing providers
  • Liaise with the various levels of government to ensure the implementation of City by laws, building codes and housing standards in West Broadway

WBCO Programs

  • Manage the work of between one and three Housing Program staff with the support of the Executive Director.
  • Work in conjunction with the Executive Director to make decisions regarding the programming that will be offered through the WBCO Housing departement.
  • Project manage the _Property Improvement Program_ (PIP Grants)

Housing Support

  • Work with WBCO staff to provide a welcoming and safe environment for vulnerable community members
  • Provide housing referral service for government housing programs; work on mediations/hearing between tenants, landlords and Residential Tenancy Branch
  • Partner with research organizations to publish studies, reports, editorial letters on relevant housing issues

Housing stakeholders and committees

  • Provide administrative support to local housing stakeholder meetings
  • Provide support to local housing stakeholder organizations and private developers

General

  • Play an ongoing role in community development and community economic development efforts on behalf of WBCO, including instigating and maintaining positive, meaningful relationships with residents, stakeholders and government representatives
  • Provide inclusive, professional supports for community members on all relevant housing related concerns and efforts
  • Support WBCO staff by attending staff meetings, WBCO special events (ie spring cleanup, AGM)
  • Representing WBCO and its mandates at all appropriate events and on select housing related committees and working groups
  • Acting as an ambassador for our organization and embodying to the greatest extent possible the spirit of inclusion, empowerment and WBCO's core principles of CED as they have been defined by Neechi Foods Worker Coop

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:


Education:


Required:
Bachelor of Arts and/or Master of Urban Planning or Community Development Worker Diploma and/or equivalent education and experience


Experience:

Three to five years of related work experience in community-based housing delivery, community planning, housing development and research


Knowledge:

A background in not-for-profit housing development, community-based planning and community initiatives implementation would be an asset

- $23 - $25/hour commensurate with experience

  • 35 hours/week (occasional evening and weekend work required)
