    Detailed Description

    The incumbent will be serving the community of North Spirit Lake on a 2-week rotational basis.


    KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


    Performs and document comprehensive assessments, physical evaluations and synthesizes data from multiple sources using principles of pathophysiology and pathogenesis to make a diagnosis of disease or disorder.

    Perform and document patients' histories, suicide risk factor assessment, and ordering of and interpreting the therapeutic and diagnostic tests.

    Responsible for providing outpatient care, ongoing nursing plan of care and maintains a collaborative and therapeutic relationship with the patient.

    Performs an ongoing assessment of environment in determining the level of safety and modifies the environment accordingly.

    Provides anticipatory guidance, education, and counseling on mental health promotion and illness prevention strategies according to clients' health status and needs and taking into account the broad range of health determinants and complex client and family dynamics.

    Provides direct, specialized, comprehensive care, emphasizing symptom management, and quality of life.
    Provides acute care nursing services and crisis management if required.
    Participates in the coordination of complex discharge planning with regional hospitals to ensure appropriate follow-up post discharge.
    Provides crisis intervention and bereavement support to families whenever possible.
    Evaluates his/her own plan of care. Revises the nursing care plan as necessary. Role models expert nursing practice and demonstrates life-long learning through ongoing professional development.
    Provides consultation to the community and Keewaytinook Okimakanak to ensure seamless mental health-care for clients and families.

    Recommends, and if needed, researches, and develops mental health promotion materials for orientation of other healthcare providers, community members, community leadership, or other community resource staff using evidence based teaching and learning methods.

    Contributes to strategic planning as required by Keewaytinook Okimakanak.
    Demonstrates a high level of skill in inter-professional team building, conflict resolution, and collaboration.
    Adheres to applicable legislation, standards, policies and procedures.
    Is familiar with the College of Nurses Standards and adheres to them.
    Participates on committees as requested by the management.
    Advocates for and uses culturally relevant and appropriate approaches when building relationships and providing nursing services.
    Should be able to work well with Indigenous Services Canada nurses, Community Leadership and other partners.


    QUALIFICATIONS


    Registered - with the College of Nurses of Ontario in an active practicing status, with a license to practice as a psychiatric health care nurse or equivalent as defined by the regulatory body.

    Able to provide documentation of successful completion of an approved Registered Nurse/Registered Practical Nursing education program.

    Minimum of one (1) year recent* experience as a mental health care nurse, or a minimum of 3 years recent nursing experience in a primary care setting providing direct client/client care.

    Mental health nursing courses are an asset, with the understanding of the phenomenon of suicide, legal and ethical issues related to suicide.

    Knowledge of the CNA code of ethics for RNs and delegated medical acts as appropriate to deliver health care services and to guide staff members and provide clients with quality preventative, curative and rehabilitative care.

    Extensive knowledge of a broad range of medical conditions and disabilities of varying complexity, as well as knowledge of corresponding evidence-based diagnosis, management and treatment plans.

    Clinical practice experience in remote or isolated communities and with First Nations populations are considered an asset.
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
    Ability to speak Cree, Oji-Cree, or Ojibway is an asset.
    Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools and a willingness to learn and use other software including electronic charting tools.
    Excellent report writing skills.
    Willingness and ability to travel.
