Position Description


Reporting to the Justice Programs Manager, the Substance Use Counsellor is responsible for providing therapeutic intervention to individuals aged 12-29 who are both justice-involved, as well as identifying substance use as a challenge.

This position will support individuals throughout the recovery process, working inter-professionally alongside physicians, nurses, case management staff, treatment centres, community health staff, as well as traditional healers and knowledge keepers towards the wellbeing of individuals served.


This position will work collaboratively with the Community Justice Centre located in Kenora, supporting individuals from KCA's 9 member First Nations.

This position is also mobile and will be actively serving clients in their home communities, collaborating alongside National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP) workers in the following of individuals at the community level.

Responsibilities
Ø Provide mental health/substance use counselling relying on both mainstream practices such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and best practice interventions in supporting individuals with concurrent disorders

Ø Facilitate connecting individuals with appropriate culture-based interventions by working in tandem with KCA Cultural Coordinators, and any other relevant staff

Ø Develop and utilize a recovery model that encompasses a wholistic approach to supporting individuals with substance use challenges

Ø Monitor clients' progress, goals and needs, using a stepped care approach

Ø Work within a harm reduction framework

Ø Provide technology-based and in-person service

Ø Ensure documentation is accurate and completed in a timely manner

Ø Adhere to KCA policies and procedures, in accordance to the KCA Code of Ethics

Ø Communicate with the direct supervisor regarding any critical situations with clients


COUNSELING ROLE
Ø Deliver therapeutic interventions focusing on recovery support, as well as treatment readiness that are wholistic, culturally safe, meeting the individual 'where they're at' while leveraging inter-professional supports which play a role in the individual's care

Ø Facilitate group mental health and substance use programming

Ø With consent from youth individuals, include parents/guardians in therapeutic work where their involvement will contribute to the well-being of youth

Ø Keep accurate, timely client contact records in accordance with program requirements


Qualifications
Ø Minimum 1-year experience counseling and/or doing healing work with individuals

Ø Excellent rapport and ability to work with youth

Ø Ability to deal with crisis and post-crisis situations

Ø Excellent skills in the following areas: teamwork, computer, organization, networking, interpersonal, presentation and communication (written & oral)

Ø Knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture and language, and experience working in First Nation communities is an asset

Ø Ability to demonstrate and work through a lens of sensitivity to diversity related to race, religion, culture, cognitive functioning, poverty, sexual orientation and gender identity


EDUCATION


Ø Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or master's level degree in Social Work (MSW), Psychology or Counselling from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Ø Eligible for membership in your professional organization

Ø Valid driver's license and vehicle

Ø Willing and able to work evenings and weekends

Ø Willing and able to be mentored, and receive training in order to develop competencies for designation as 'Addictions Specialist'

Ø Current satisfactory criminal reference check with vulnerable sector search

Ø Understanding of the language of the Anishi
