Quebec Counsel Role

What will you do?
- provide proactive, timely and effective legal support and advice to business partners, management and client-facing and administrative teams across Canada on a broad range of matters;
- negotiate and draft a variety of contracts;
- advise on new legislation and regulatory requirements in the financial services industry, with a specific focus on Quebec laws;
- advise business partners on new product development related initiatives;
- draft, review, and advise on a variety of contractual arrangements, policies, and related forms;
- review and advise on Client and Advisor facing product and marketing materials;
- advise on Client complaints and related advisor disputes involving the sale and distribution of life and health insurance products, and wealth products, in Quebec;
- advise on "title" issues related to Quebec Client insurance policies (e.g. consulting on issues related to beneficiary, POA, creditor claims, assignment, insolvency issues, etc.);
- advise on a variety of Quebec specific product distribution matters (e.g. Quebec specific regulatory requirements, issues and disputes with Quebec-based distribution firms and advisors, etc.); and
- support business development teams in calls and negotiations;
- support and advise Sun Life's Government & Regulatory Affairs, Compliance, and Risk teams on Quebec specific legislative and regulatory initiatives.


What do you need to succeed?
- a member in good standing with the Barreau du Québec with ideally at least 3 years of private practice and/or in-house experience;

  • Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for the frequent interactions with English and Frenchspeaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada and worldwide;
- enthusiastic about supporting Sun Life Canada in a variety of initiatives;
- adaptable to changing workloads, areas of work, and business demands;
- provide advice in a simple and practical manner;
- proactive and a self-starter with an ability to handle a high volume of work and take a risk-based approach to prioritize work;
- able to engage and influence others; and
- able to collaborate, gain trust of business partners, and explain complex topics using simple language and clear language.
