RESPONSIBILITIES


Reporting to the Senior Manager, Program Development and Engagement, the Food Services Manager will oversee all kitchen operations at SGH's current community kitchen, creating a high-quality, cost-effective food experience for residents in supportive housing and people experiencing homelessness.

The Food Services Manager will develop and implement a food services roadmap to enhance the efficiency and quality of food services across SGH buildings and programs.

This includes, but is not limited to, centralizing menu creation and ordering, ensuring best practices in food handling and food safety, and planning for the transition of the food services program from its current location to a new, state-of-the-art and purpose-built kitchen in spring 2025.


Duties include:

  • Development and articulation of a food service vision for SGH that aligns with the specific needs of our residents and service users;
  • Direct daily operations of food production including menu planning, purchasing/ordering, inventory, food preparation, disposal, sustainability and cost management;
  • Manage financials for the food program, including food costs, inventory, equipment and materials;
  • Participate in the development/execution of SGH inkind donation strategy, seek food donations and coordinate with the food bank and existing regular food donors to manage program costs;
  • Supervise, develop, train, communicate and reinforce the service vision and standards to kitchen and dining room staff and regular contingent of volunteers, driving a culture of performance and high engagement;
  • Welcome, guide and provide an engaging kitchen experience for corporate or other volunteer groups;
  • Establish operating standards and implement quality improvements;
  • Research and propose operational improvements aligned with SGH sustainability commitments (e.g. waste reduction, local sourcing, plantbased menu items, sustainable serviceware);
  • Establish and maintain business relationships with vendors, suppliers and partners;
  • Establish regular feedback mechanism to ensure menus meet the needs of residents and service users;
  • Ensure compliance with municipal, provincial and federal regulations and standards, including but not limited to food safety; and
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Red Seal certification;
  • Valid food safety certificate;
  • Minimum of 4 years experience working in a related field;
  • Minimum of 4 years of previous management or supervisory experience; experience managing in an unionized environment is an asset;
  • Effective leadership style, positive outgoing personality and effective listening skills;
  • Proven experience in menu and service design, menu costing;
  • Excellent critical thinking, organizational and communication skills;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, as well as the ability to work on their own initiative, without ongoing supervision;
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with service users/residents;
  • Basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Competencies in computer systems including Microsoft Office (outlook, word, excel, etc.);
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must by at least 18 years of age;
  • Able to lift up to 25kg.; and
  • Able to read text and communicate orally in English. Ability to communicate in other languages is considered an asset.

Salary:
$68,292.00-$87,804.00 per year
