This is a term position until January 15, 2025

Responsibilities:


  • Collects and processes routine samples in a laboratory setting.
  • Assists at field sites.
  • Assists in or performs tests, experiments or routines involving basic, standardized techniques or procedures.
  • Prepares standardized samples, solutions, media or reagents for use in a laboratory following prescribed formulas and/or techniques.
  • Sets up and cleans laboratories.
  • Sets up and operates standard equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance, makes minor repairs and assembles basic apparatus.
  • Planning and scheduling the use of lab space, cooler and freezer space and laboratory equipment by different researchers/students in the lab.
  • Identifies when chemicals, equipment, artifacts and general supplies are depleted from an inventory.
  • Keeps safety records and safety data sheets up to date.
  • Performs basic data input, verification and analysis using a computer terminal and prescribed programs and methods.
  • Compiles basic bibliographic information which may involve using library services.

Qualifications:


  • Completion of two years of an undergraduate degree in a related discipline from a recognized institution or in a Diploma program.
  • A BSc in chemistry, soil science, environmental science or related discipline preferred.
  • Experience in routine soil and water analysis.
  • Use of laboratory equipment that are routinely used in soil and water laboratories.
  • Conducting laboratory research in soil science.
  • Microsoft office (Excel, word).
  • Operation of UV spectrophotometer.
  • Familiarity with Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy.
  • Maintenance and the use of soil redox probes.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
