The Product Development Manager is responsible for leading our stellar PD team that drives the development process for new and existing American Tall products working in partnership with marketing, technical design, and merchandising counterparts.

The PDM is responsible to balance development timelines, costing requirements, quality expectations, and product functionality within the company parameters.

You will be responsible to strategize product milestones and roadmaps, weighing industry standards throughout this process, and will be the project management driver to deliver premium, functional, and innovative products through to the manufacturing cycle.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Partner with Merchandisers to build the product development schedule season by season
  • Hold the department accountable to development and production timelines by working with the technical design manager and production manager, ensuring expectations about schedules are understood and deadlines are met
  • Build and champion the product development work in progress (WIP) report including all the necessary information pertaining to product under development
  • Communicate development timelines and milestone expectations to all relevant stakeholders including the marketing department using a development time & action calendar
  • In tandem with merchandisers, laisse with the marketing team to ensure they are equipped with all necessary product information to build promotions and ecommerce content for upcoming seasons
  • Manage and empower a team of product developers who will work with merchandisers, technical designers, and marketers to support the development process throughout all stages
  • Leverage our product lifecycle management (PLM) software, WFX, to accurately maintainand any updates product specs. Ensure the team is doing the same.
  • Relentlessly consider ways to improve overall development workflow to minimize potential gaps in process and speed up product development delivery
  • Proactively identify problems/challenges with development timelines that may impact delivery timelines and communicate to stakeholders
  • Provide regular updates to leadership team regarding product development progress
  • Ensure all fully developed products are successfully passed along to our Production Team for their reference during the production cycle.

Experience, Education and Qualifications:


  • Post secondary degree or diploma in fashion/apparel design, production, or similar field
  • 5 + years industry experience preferably within Product Development or Product Management
  • 5 + years of people management experience in a similar role managing a team of developers, designers, or coordinators
  • Experience with facilitating offshore production of retail products
  • Well versed working with WFX or similar product lifecycle management software
  • Experience using a product information management system (PIM) is a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:


  • Outstanding organization and time management skills
  • Technical knowledge of ready to wear product lifecycle including garment fit, construction, costing, and offshore manufacturing
  • Proficiency in MS office (Excel/Word/Outlook and Adobe illustrator
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the apparel manufacturing process
  • Passionate about mentoring, coaching and training team members according to individual goals and objectives
  • Approaches problem solving with a conceptual and strategic mindset
  • Thrives in a fast paced environment that requires cross functional teamwork and collaboration
  • Ability to be empowering and decisive delegator/distributor of work in order to meet goals
  • A leader by example who easily maintains composure under pressure
  • Must have a positive attitude
