Description

The position of a School Child & Youth Care Worker is working directly with the young people who attend Oak Hill School as part of the learning team at Oak Hill School.

They will work directly with the teachers and educational assistants to teach and support the young people in the classroom and school environment.


The position of the School Child & Youth Care Worker follows the teachers of Sturgeon Public School Division (SPS) calendar based on the education grant that SPS receives for the School CYC's.

SPS contracts the school CYC through Oak Hill Ranch.

The annual salary of $54,000 is prorated to the school calendar year.

Hours are 8am-4pm Monday-Friday, aliging with the Sturgeon County School Divison calendar.

The School Child & Youth Care Worker is directly responsible to the Educational Services Manager._


Duties:


  • Each School CYC is assigned a program to complete check in and read logs from the weekends and prior evenings. They will check in on that program upon arriving for their shift and connect with program staff working as well as the young people themselves. Any appointments, visits or significant information shall be shared during the check in. During the morning briefing with all school staff the school CYC will relay what they have read as well as what was shared by program staff to the school staff.
  • School CYC's are responsible for ensuring students walking back to the programs from school are supervised and accounted for.
  • Observes, assesses and documents significant behaviors emitted by young people in their daily journals on ShareVision under the school heading.
  • Monitors, supports and actively participates in classes.
  • On an ongoing basis, observes and assesses interactions, behaviors and moods, in order to timely respond to teachable moments.
  • Teaches and assists young people in acquiring appropriate skills in the classroom and school environment.
  • Provides young people with assistance and encouragement with their academics.
  • Observes, assesses, and documents the general state of client health and safety needs. Refers to and informs medical resource persons as necessary to deal with health and emergency issues.
  • Dispenses medication according to prescribed procedures and document as such on medication chart.
  • Teaches children basic and advanced life skills, incorporating essentials such as personal hygiene and appearance, social skills and manners, as well as coping skills related to peer pressure and teen issues.
  • Develop a helping relationship with the young people.
  • Advocates and actively builds trust and rapport with young people through talk, play, activities, and personal interactions. Actively utilizes down time during classes for more personal interactions with the young person in order to understand and better present the viewpoints of the young person.
  • Provides counselling opportunities for young people focusing upon the young person's needs and problems. Also provides opportunities for young people to express their feelings and opinions, while explaining alternative ways to cope with developmental and situational problems.
  • Intervenes in crisis situation with young people utilizing non abusive restraint practices as necessary.
  • Maintains school security, opening and locking designated doors, in order to protect young people and staff.
  • Maintains school and ranch property as well as equipment in a satisfactory manner, using common sense and prescribed procedures.
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g. fire, natural disaster) according to prescribed procedures and guidelines from Oak Hill Ranch and Sturgeon Public Schools.
  • Maintains a therapeutic approach to behavior management and explains behavioral expectations and consequences to young people.
  • Completes critical incident reports after an incident.
  • Familiarizes new students to the school setting in a personal and caring way, reviewing the physical and social set up, rules, routines and program objectives. Provides personalized attention in order to reduce a child's anxieties and provides all necessary information related to the school environment.
  • Shares information, coordinates activities, cooperates and maintains open, supportive and professional relationships with co-workers, ranch program staff and members of the treatment team.
  • Provides input and collaborates with the school staff team, ranch program staff in decision making and problem-solving processes related to the school programming.
  • Remains informed of client progress and program developments by reading daily logs, treatment plans, and case conference reports.
  • Keeps informed of current professional trends in the field of childcare.
  • Participates and assists in planning and facilitating school events such as Halloween, Pride Week.
