Description

We are looking for a creative, caring, dependable and friendly person, to provide companionship, support and instruction for our son, a young adult with high-functioning autism, who is friendly and talkative.

(He is in his 20's, BUT in terms of his behaviour, interacting with him is more like supporting/interacting with an 8 to 10 year-old.)

This is an on-going role; and we are looking for someone who is able to build a relationship and make a commitment to support our son for at least one year.

In this role, you will join our son on daily walks (in the neighbourhood and near-by parks.)

Outings, such as library, gym and (if you can swim) possibly swimming at the local pool, may be done as well.

You will plan and guide in simple arts & crafts activities, simple cooking (e.g. buying ingredients and making a smoothie or simple cookies), doing puzzles and exercise on the treadmill or using the WII. With your help, our son can try new activities and practice daily living skills.
Our home-program uses developmental, play-based therapy approaches, with a strong focus on communication skills. Activities, such as arts & crafts and simple cooking, are used to help us further develop communication skills. We are happy to guide/train you.

Schedule:
We are looking for someone who will support our son 2-3 times a week, on weekdays, 4-5 hours per day (.i.e. up to a total of 15 hours per week + an additional hour of paid planning.)

Typically, the hours are 10:30 AM till 3:30PM, but there is some flexibility. Additional hours may become available in the future.

Pay:
$23.00 to $24.00 per hour.

Location:
We live in the Yonge/Clark area in Thornhill.
- have experience working or volunteering with kids (Possibly as a babysitter, camp-counsellor, student of ECE/CYW, therapist or instructor);
- have the ability to plan activities; and
- have a valid Ontario driver's license.

This opportunity may be of particular interest for those considering studying Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Pathology, Recreation Therapy, special-education or related fields - and looking to gain hands-on experience and training.

It may also be suitable for stay-at-home parents, semi-retired, or those with experience in ECE, teaching, special-education or therapy.
