Role Summary
The Design Engineer role is an intermediate-to-senior level position for the design engineering work at Encepta.

The Design Engineer will have their professional engineer (P.Eng.) designation and maintain the designation in good standing within their practicing province(s).

This role works in areas such as design, engineering, authenticating work, providing quality assurance, teaching others and some elements of project management.

This is a predominantly office-based role which requires frequent interaction with team members and external stakeholders.

  • P.Eng. designation required (AB or BC with ability to obtain both) as well as requirement to maintain designation in good standing within practicing province(s);
  • Strong experience and know how in aerial cable/pole line design for telco or utilities in AB or BC.
  • Operating knowledge of regulatory environment related to pole lines in AB/BC or ability to learn quickly (demonstrated by similar knowledge sets)
  • Strong knowledge of related pole line survey and fielding techniques.
  • Solution focused attitude (can prove they get projects over the finish line on their own motivation)
  • Good software & technology skills or ability to learn.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical leader for a small design, drafting, and fielding group.
  • Perform design work focused on pole line and aerial cabling with support and collaboration for other technical areas including:
  • Outside/inside plant telecommunications and utility design, which include aspects of civil, cable, and pole line design for fibre networks (GPON/FTTP), copper, coax cable, HFC, radio frequency or small cell-designs;
  • Perform 2D drafting using AutoCAD to support designs;
  • Utilize design software such as SPIDAcalc, Quickpole, IKE office, and other tools.
  • Provide thorough quality assurance and checks on design work;
  • Authenticate and stamp work as allowed through P.Eng. authority;
  • Perform and oversee site visits to perform field reviews, measurements, observations;
  • Respond to RFI's, RFQ's, red lines, and other project related items;
  • Coordinate design components to ensure complete design package execution, including correcting missing information, quality checking, revisions, and ensuring accurate construction per plan;
  • Communicate effectively and build positive relationships with team members, clients, developers, and any other external stakeholders;
  • Mentorship and training of new hires or junior team members on various types of Encepta's project designs;
  • Participate in and lead training initiatives as designated by Encepta;
  • Assist with providing quotes or cost analysis for the team;
  • Coordinate and manage fielding and construction teams to ensure cost/quality/schedule objectives are met;
  • Find ways to add value to the organization through P.Eng. designation and experience;
  • Research and create standards for varying types of telecommunications, design and engineering related services;
  • Some occasional travel required;
  • Research and development of new processes and technology;
  • Uphold and promote adherence to Training, Operating and Health and Safety Procedures;
  • Other duties as required.

  • Experienced in drafting and design work for civil, utility or telecom related projects;
  • Ability to use professional judgment and experience to authenticate work;
  • Experience working with Google Suite (Gmail, Google Meet, Google Sheets, Google Drive) or equivalent Microsoft apps;
  • Exposure to design types such as GPON FTTP, FTTx, PLA, other Outside Plant Design;
  • Proficient and efficient in drafting software such as AutoCAD and Spatialnet;
  • Displays careful attention to detail, can QA their work and others;
  • Ability to be resourceful and research existing and new approaches to completing work;
  • Strong problem solving skills and the ability to think things through to arrive at a solution;
  • Organized, time conscious and focused on results;
  • Ability to manage multiple, ongoing project tasks;
  • Ability to work efficiently on time sensitive projects with changing deliverables and priorities;
  • Ability to teach and provide mentorship to others;
  • Can make suggestions to improve processes or procedures for higher efficiency and cost savings;
  • Team player with welldeveloped interpersonal skills who is comfortable in a crossfunctional, diverse team environment;
  • Courteous and approachable customer service approach to inter and external stakeholders.
