Basic Function:
Reporting to the Manager of Welfare Science, this position will assist in behavioural research to assess animal welfare.

They will work with the Manager of Welfare Science and the Supervisor of Behavioural Husbandry on various projects as they relate to welfare and other duties as directed.


Responsibilites:


  • Assist with the animal welfare process
  • Assist in behavioural research for various animals
  • Assist with data collection for various research initiatives
  • Assist with compiling and interpreting behavioral data
  • Assist with behavioural husbandry (enrichment & training)
  • Assist with writing funding and grant proposals
  • Provide progress reports to Toronto Zoo staff
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager or their designate

Qualifications:


  • University or college graduate; background in environmental science, conservation biology, or zoology
  • Previous behavioural research experience
  • Experience in data collection and analysis
  • Able to work in varying climate conditions
  • Ability to work overtime, shift work and weekends
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Experience in research and fundraising desirable
  • Computer skills; Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job
