The Focused Ultrasound Laboratory at Sunnybrook Research Institute in Toronto, Ontario is looking for a motivated and serious individual to fill the role of Research Assistant.

Focused ultrasound is changing the way that surgery is performed by allowing treatment of tumours and other diseases without ever making an incision.

Focused ultrasound was listed as one of the Top 50 Inventions by Time Magazine (Nov, 2011), and was presented at TedMed in October, 2011.


Our group is one of the leading laboratories in the world in the development of highly innovative, leading-edge technology for completely non-invasive image-guided surgery and targeted drug delivery using focused ultrasound.

We are involved in a broad spectrum of projects ranging from technology development, modelling of ultrasound-tissue interactions, and evaluation of novel devices and delivery strategies in tissues and animal models.

The technology being developed in our group will be used to treat benign or malignant tumours and a variety of neurological disorders non-invasively.

Many of these projects are conducted with close collaboration with medical device industry. The Physical Sciences Platform at Sunnybrook has spun off many companies, and is a hotbed for innovation.

This research lab has a truly multi-disciplinary team of individuals with backgrounds in physics, engineering, biology, and medicine. The clinical relevance of this work is high, and the pace of research is fast.

This is an excellent environment for a motivated individual interested in the field of medical technology and biomedical engineering to gain valuable skills and experience.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The research assistant will conduct key tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Providing a wide variety of para-veterinary health care duties and regulatory documentation
  • Administration of medications & first aid, take blood, tissue or urine samples
  • Record keeping of drugs, experimental animal information, and animal use protocols
  • Collection, handling & preparation of samples for shipment or submission for testing
  • Technical Assistance with surgeries/procedures involving animals
  • Preparation of animals & equipment for surgery/procedures, monitor animals through surgery/procedure and postoperative monitoring
  • Meet with scientists/technician to discuss their requirements
  • Must be able to enter an MRI environment.
  • Must be able to lift minimum 20kg comfortably

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:


  • Master of Science degree in Biology field
  • Experience with primary literature and review
  • Past handson rodent animal experience (tail vein experience an asset)
  • This position requires a _high level of technical skill,_ organization and initiative, and a proven ability to work both independently and in a group setting
  • Must have the ability to follow established policies, guidelines, procedures and objectives. In addition, must possess ability to detect, analyze and creatively resolve issues as they arise
  • Excellent time management, record keeping and attention to detail are essential
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills and the ability to interact positively with other team members in a dynamic environment, as well as having compassion and sensitivity for animals
  • Past experience in Animal User Protocol (AUP) preparation
  • Flexible hours with occasional weekend, holiday, and evening work will be required
  • Work is on site
