JOB SUMMARY:

The Social Services Assistant Quadra and Pandora Thrift Shops will be an active member of our Thrift Shop team.

They will experience a positive and welcoming team of staff and volunteers, who support each other as they serve and support seniors, members of the public, and our community partners.

Students will experience working with small and large groups throughout their placement.

They will attend staff meetings, be assigned tasks, problem solve, make decisions and take on different roles for events and/or projects.

They will experience the value that all members add to our team and will receive feedback throughout the placement.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Working with volunteers, donors, and public who include all ages and all socioeconomic groups
  • Providing retail assistance and mentoring for those who are developing employment skills
  • Assist with all aspects of operations of the Thrift Shop including:
  • Accept and price incoming donations
  • Provide customers with assistance and service more for the stores downtown
  • Operate cash register and handle sales
  • Retail layout and display
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed for the safety of volunteers, customers, donors and staff
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Applicant must be between 1530 years of age and a Canadian citizen (Canada Summer Jobs requirements)
  • High school graduation
  • Applicant must have just finished full time schooling and be returning to full time schooling in the fall
  • Preference will be given to those studying gerontology, mental health and addictions, social work, sociology, psychology, employment counseling, education
  • Some retail experience an asset
  • Must be able to work weekends

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Ability to work with volunteers with various barriers to employment
  • Flexibility, ability to make decisions and act independently
  • Skilled in the use of computers, the internet and electronic devices

Beacon Community Services serves vulnerable populations including seniors, people with disabilities and children. Protecting these people and our teams on whom they rely is critical to us.

  • All successful applicants are required to disclose their COVID19 vaccination status upon hire. Vaccination is a requirement in some of our facilities.
