    Mini Excavator Operator (Continuous)

    POSITION FUNCTION

    Operate a mini excavator and attachments on various roadway and sidewalk construction and maintenance projects and related work.

    KEY DUTIES

    Operate a mini excavator and attachments for use in the construction and maintenance of various roadway and sidewalk projects. Attachments such as a breaker, hoe pack and hoe ram to excavate, load, grade, move and compact earth and materials; lift and move items such as broken asphalt and concrete or road plates into position; remove and replace mini excavator attachments as required. Assist with concrete pours and asphalt work as required.

    Perform pre- and post-trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; check and adjust air brakes; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; check first aid and safety equipment.

    Complete daily equipment log and time sheet; perform minor maintenance such as cleaning and washing vehicle interior and exterior. Deal with suppliers to receive and pick up materials.

    Assist crews with concrete and road maintenance/construction activities.

    Review engineering plans, BC 1, and underground checks to confirm that the location of underground utilities and services have been marked out or flagged prior to commencing work.

    Perform related duties where qualified, including operation of a backhoe excavator.

    INDEPENDENCE

    Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed while in progress by on site Supervisor.

    Problems such as equipment repairs and procedural problems are referred to supervisor or mechanical shop.

    Periods of intense concentration while manoeuvring a large vehicle around workers, pedestrians, overhead wires, and other vehicles. (frequent)

    Exposure to dust, vibration, and equipment noise. (continuous)

    Work in close proximity to traffic and construction hazards. (often)

    KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Organize and prioritize work.

    Understand and carry out job related instructions.

    Use hand tools, instruments and power equipment.

    Operate a mini excavator and related attachments.

    Read engineering plans, utility information sheets and grade sheets.

    Maintain accurate records.

    Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

    Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.

    Work and operate equipment safely.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

    High school graduation.

    Current and valid Class 3 B.C. Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement.

    Experience:

    4 years of experience operating mini-excavator, with 2 years related road and concrete construction and maintenance experience;

    or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    OTHER:

    May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

    Formal training in operation of heavy equipment preferred.

    Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm, 40 hour work week

    $37.65 per hour, Pay Grade 9 (Under Review)
