Position Summary:


Provide efficient and effective administrative support to the Quebec Inter-university Centre for Social Statistics (QICSS) McGill-Concordia Laboratory and the Centre on Population Dynamics, in accordance with the units' goals and objectives, while ensuring coherence with the University's mission and culture.

Support activities related to general administration including, but not limited to:
finance, human resources, communications, student affairs, physical resources, archives, governance and legal affairs.


Also support the financial aspect of the training program offered by The Consortium on Analytics for Data-Driven Decision-Making (CAnD3) and act as a liaison for the Centre d'accès aux données de recherche de l'Institut de la statistique du Québec (CADRISQ).


The QICSS Laboratory promotes advanced quantitative research by providing specialized training in advanced statistical methods, a range of scientific activities and the environment and resources needed to analyze detailed microdata from Statistics Canada.

The QICSS Laboratory is part of the Québec Interuniversity Centre for Social Statistics, comprising seven Quebec universities with whom there is regular contact and collaboration.

Initially, a collaboration between three departments (Sociology, Economics and Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health) in two faculties (Arts and Medicine), the Centre on Population Dynamics (CPD) currently includes members coming from nine departments and four faculties at McGill and five other universities across the globe.

Members conduct research in five axes (family dynamics; social and economic determinant of health; education, skill acquisition and labour; migration; aging over the life course), under three overarching themes:
applied quantitative methods, life course perspective, and global scope covering developed and developing countries.


L'Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ) makes available to researchers the detailed microdata files it collects as well as some information held by public agencies (e.g., Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec, Ministère de l'Éducation and Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur, etc.) through the Centres d'accès aux données de recherche de l'Institut de la statistique du Québec (CADRISQ), including the one recently opened on the McGill University campus.


The Consortium on Analytics for Data-Driven Decision-Making (CAnD3) is collaborating to develop and deliver an innovative training program, Population Analytics in an Aging Society, to complement formal training in population research with skills to support evidence-informed decision-making.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Establish regular exchange and collaboration with the QICSS's other components and with users of the Laboratory;
  • Maintain regular exchange and coordinate with the Statistics Canada analysts affiliated with the QICSS Laboratory;
  • Administer the secretariat of the QICSS Laboratory and the CPD (minutes of various committees and meetings, annual activity & financial reports, room booking, financial transactions, human resources, etc.);
  • Promote the QICSS Laboratory and CPD to researchers, centres, and institutes that use social statistics through a variety of activities or promotional material (meetings, presentations, posters, etc.);
  • Organize research activities for both the QICSS Laboratory and the CPD (conferences, workshops, trainings, seminar series, receptions, etc.) and occasionally the CAnD3;
  • Assist with updating and maintaining both the QICSS and CPD websites;
  • Gather, organize and format relevant information in support of the administration of the unit.
  • Respond to support requests from researchers regarding funding issues;
  • Monitor financial budgets for both the QICSS Laboratory, the CPD and the CAnD
  • Oversee to the proper functioning of the units (IT support requests, Building issues, Access, etc.) and act as a resource person for the QICSS Laboratory users and the various services of the University;
  • Act as liaison for the Centre d'accès aux données de recherche de l'Institut de la statistique du Québec (CADRISQ) between the Centre and the McGill University (Security Services, Building Issues, Access).

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities:
Bachelor's Degree preferred.

Directly relevant experience working as an administrator in an academic/higher education environment with a proven ability to manage complex, multi-faceted mandates.

Experience managing financial budgets. Client-focused, excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to engage with various stakeholders with tact and diplomacy. Advanced problem-solving, priority-setting, analytical and organizational skills. Strong attention to detail. Proficiency in a PC environment, including Microsoft Suite.
