General Accountability

Key Accountabilities

Underwriting Production- Supports the development of annual business plans (by line of business) and is accountable for the underlying activities to meet plans.

Reports monthly to the RVP with appropriate action plans.- Directs and oversees the underwriting of policies on new business, renewals, revisions and cancellations of products, including risk assessment and approvals.- Makes decisions in underwriting difficult accounts and/or claims situations that escalate beyond the front line staff and underwriting managers, including communicating those decisions to brokers and customers.- Exercises the highest underwriting authority in Saskatchewan and is accountable for select risks or situations that fall outside of standard guidelines.- Ensures the attraction of quality business by working closely with regional and corporate underwriting along with the product/pricing and analytics teams; recommends corrective action as necessary.- Manages the overall UW program with a focus on risk appetite, policy retention, growth and profitability.- Represents the company in legal proceedings.


Product Support, Maintenance and Development- Ensures the UW program and guidelines contribute to meeting profitable growth objectives and align with established corporate and department risk appetite and rating models.- Ensures the UW program and guidelines capitalize on market opportunity and gathers, assesses and communicates market intelligence to internal stakeholders, including Product Management, Business Development, Customer and Marketing Strategy, and Claims.

Stays current in the market and drives progress in the underwriting approach.- Participates in product development initiatives and changes in conjunction with Product Management and Business Development.- Consults and contributes with all stakeholders to effectively communicate product-related items and information.- Identifies gaps or opportunities and recommends solutions to help achieve profitable growth aspirations.- Represents the region in ongoing product and pricing reviews, ensuring proper position for success.


Stakeholder Relations- Collaborates with corporate underwriting and business development to build and maintain effective relationships with broker partners, ensuring proper support is received to meet or exceed profit and growth targets.- Ensures team members are well trained and capable in delivering outstanding service to brokers; ensures the team leads the market in ease of doing business and that underwriters are seen by brokers as top quartile in the industry.- Establishes criteria in collaboration with corporate underwriting, product management and business development for analysis of broker performance.- Collaborates with Corporate Underwriting in the Implementation, execution and monitoring of broker and customer service standards and results.


Process and Work-Flow Management- Collaborates with corporate underwriting to implement UW productivity benchmarks and monitor the need for change.- Collaborates with corporate underwriting to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement to leverage technology and digital strategies.- Establishes broker and customer service standards and monitors results.- Develops the departmental structure to achieve production and service standards.- Ensures broker and customer service levels are maintained.- Collaborates with Corporate Underwriting in the review and continuous evaluation of internal UW processes, automation and procedures to effectively meet broker and customer expectations.- Executes on implementation and monitoring of Corporate guidelines.


People Leadership- Builds a high performing workforce by actively leading human resource activities.- Ensures development of divisional succession plans.- Builds a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies, ensuring integration with employee performance development and career development plans.- Drives performance through team members and is committed to leadership development across the company, supporting employees and workforce readiness through mentoring, training and developmental opportunities.


Corporate Management- Ensures programs and policies are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.- Manages risk in area of authority.
